I have been searching for the right used boat now for a year now and unless I find something right this spring I may end up biting the bullet and ordering new.

I want a 17 footer that will fit in my garage (and budget) and has the front and rear casting decks for smallmouth, muskie ..but also be able to troll for the occasional walleye.

The new Recon 785 caught my eye. Does anyone have one, or have any first hand knowledge (ride, layout, motor options, etc)? I'm also wondering how it will compare to the proposed Tuffy x-176? Descriptions seem similar.

Any updates/timeline for the x-176? Or opinion how it might compare to Recon 785?

Why not the Tuffy 1760 deep V? Get the esox series and you get a removable rear casting deck.

Possibly, but I'm looking for something lighter 1000-1100 pounds...(I think 1760 is 1400). Also it seems the x-190 has a little lower sides than 1760. Assuming x-176 would be a lower profile too (easier for lippin and flippin bass). Not sure about the profile of the Recon although the weight is okay. Need to see one in person...or talk to those that have been in one.

i looked at a Recon 785 and a Tuffy 1760 esox last Feb, and i decided to go with the Tuffy. On paper they didnt look much different but the 1760 esox GC had way more usable fishing space so that is what made my decision. I love the Tuff and the removable rear deck is HUGE! Also the G series Tuffy sits a little lower in the water i think than the standard 1760's. Good luck, both looked like great boats!

Why not the 1700?

1) Does the "G" series 1760 actually sit lower in the water than the non-G 1760? Does anyone have a picture of the interior layout/gunnels?

2) Yes, I have been looking for a used 1700 for about a year (either tiller or side console) with a 4 stroke and haven't been able to find.

The 1760 and 1760 G series draft the same. The interiors are identical as well. The only difference is the cap on the 1760 Osprey or Esox Deep V and the synthetic gunnel on the G models.

Question - As I continue my search for a used boat...can anyone tell me when Tuffy went to all composite hulls? I have had some conflicting reports from private parties - have heard anywhere from 2003 to 2005 was when the switch was made.

I almost pulled the trigger on an earlier model last summer until a soft transom was detected...the owner wasn't even aware of...

Depends on the model.

The V hulls were all switched over for the 2006 model numbers I believe.
