Maybe a dumb question but I really don't know. When fishing at night with headlamps, do you guys usually just turn them on when needed or do you keep them on while casting to see follows? I can see some sense in doing so but also imagine it could turn some fish off having a spotlight in their eyes.

Also, any suggestions for the better headlamps on the market right now? thanks!

Hiya,

I will have my headlamp off while fishing. I don't worry too much about follows at night because my retrieve always involves two figure 8's at the end. Makes for some very fun nights when a fish follows and either hits at boatside, or spooks... Can't see them, and all of the sudden...SWOOSH!! If I hook up, on goes the head lamp.

I have yet to find a good headlamp, but I have been looking hard at getting one of the Black Diamond Icon headlamps that have 200 lumens and is waterproof... The little ones just don't cut it for my eyes anymore...

I miss the older incandescent bulbs...a little softer on the eyes...

Steve

This type of light may not be for everyone, but I have one two different ones for hunting and think I will use them as my fishing lights. They are not cheep, but holy cow are they bright and they are rechargeable. I have a 21 volt belt light with both an led head and an incandescent head. I also have the convertible light with G2 color head. That dude is BRIGHT!

Browning makes one that costs about $50, and it's crazy bright.

I'd rather have one that's not that bright, too bright and its hard to get you're eyes back to seeing in the dark. We leave them off until a fish is hooked, changing baits, and most importantly for me is the quick flash at the buoys. They are like a magnet to my baits at night...
The ones at the big box stores work fine for me. It's also important to have good spotlights in the boat.

The led lenser series of head lights is the best that i have found they have variable beams, variable light intensity and rechargable or just battery. If you go to thier website they have video on the lights. The place that has them for sale the cheapest was opticsplanet.com

Coast makes a small headlight, takes 3 AAA batts, same as led lensor H7. I just bought another one, its 198 lumens. Adjustable lamp, has flood or beam. Great light!!! I got mine at Lowes for @ 40.00.

Princeton Tech makes some pretty nice ones, and they're made in the USA. I bought a Cabela's guide series made by them, and I like it so far.

Look at the princeton tec quad. Great lamp with 100 hours of battery time and the only one for about $29 that is IPX 8 or waterproof.. It has high, med and low.. and blinking...

another one is the black diamond. they are only IPX4 in that price range but have the ability to adjust the light intensity by just holding down the on button. Its infinate and not restrictive to high, med, low.. Its protected against splashing but not waterproof.

Another vote for princeton tec. I have been running them for about 8 years and have been very happy with them. Made in the usa and customer service is top notch. They stand behing their products. I hade a wire break after a few years on one they asked what model I was sending in and I stated that I wished they had the all l.e.d model out when I purchased mine....guess what they replaced mine with
I also only turn my light on to net a fish or remove weeds/change baits....all othet times its left off. When you go high on the turns in the 8 you will be suprised at how many times you will see fish depending on moon and other lights.
