| Hi there, I wanted to know if there is a way to create a map of a lake (depths, etc) using a gps and a depth finder so that time after time I can create my own map of the lake.
Where I fish there are no info nor maps so I always have to reley purely on my fishfinder but I miss all the general structure of the lake.
Thanks y'all...

Location: Eastern Ontario | I used Dr Depth for a time but found I spent too much time editing the map and trying to keep up with the upgrades. I believe some of the newer Lowarance units will do this for you (for a price) |

If you have an HDS unit, this is free. (Haven't used it, seems cool though). You can create a map by hand too, but it require a bit more labor.

| THink the Drdepth is cool and seems to have better accuracy on the mesuring sede...but it comes at a cost and you have a little nerd job for setting it up. I've got a pretty basic Humminbird 550 wich I think I need to replace any way so....if the cost of the DRdepth + thefishfinder with the gps is not too far away from a "coplete lowrance" i think i can got with the last option... |

You'd think somebody out there could make an app like this and undercut everybody. Why not create a sonar transducer that can hook up to a tablet via USB or bluetooth? Standard tablets already have GPS and probably way more processing power than anything Lowrance is making and it costs <$500 vs $3,000+, not to mention a better screen. You can sell 12v chargers and waterproof/shock cases to boot.

Seems like suck a good idea. I have been talking this over with my brother, and he has the computer sense, but not the inclination. I am the opposite.

| I think that the Drdepth is the way to go. But it's an old concept. Nowdays you've got to have a way to share stuff with others...I mean...what about a system wich is free to use collects the datas from all users, compares them and then produces a complete map wich can be sold to people individually...all You shuold have is a cellphone with a gps (all of them) and your depthfinder...

| The new Lowrance mapping software was developed by a law school buddy of mine and his friend under the name Contour Innovations. Only practical way to get it out to fishermen was to team up with one of the major electronics manufacturers. Guy quit his job at a twin cities law firm and spent two years living on Ramen to make it happen. Don't whine about paying a little to make your own lake maps. |

| Dose that work even with lakes that are not on the navionic database? |

Location: Eastern Ontario | Like Dr Depth it only works for data you record on areas you survey. You must go on the water and log data on a card. Your unit will record a track with GPS position and depth when you have thouroughly covered an area you generate a contour map.
In Dr depth you will not get areas too shallow to take the boat or shoreline and islands unless you put them in your self. I imagine Insite works the same. Someone smarter than me could probably overlay a google map. I found it to be more work than I was prepared to do

| That's exactly what I'm worried about. I don't want to spend to spend 1K and then find out that Im not capable of doin' the nerd job.. |
