| As the winter ice season is approaching (and the winter river fishing), I am looking to pick up a pair of good fishing gloves. I don't mind cold so much, so a huge pair of mittens isn't necessary. Just something that is lightweight so I can maintain dexterity, but take the bite off of the cold... there are many many many many options, so I figured i'd ask y'all what you use.... Thanks!

It's been discussed a lot. The search function can lead you to a wealth of information. Just search one category at a time and limit the search to one year or less, otherwise it tends to time out. BTW, some of the best information on this forum IMO is back in 2003 and around that time frame. Lots of good reading there once you're caught up with the current threads.

| I've been happy with my Seirus Xtreme gloves. They are not insulated, but they keep the water out, which is the best way to keep your hands warm. They are pretty thin too so they don't get in the way. Used them a number of days sucker fishing this fall and they were great.

| Check out some of the Neoprene Golves seen at many of your online retailers. They are great if you hands are in and out of the water (ice fishing). They are not the warmest but they keep your hands dry. |

Location: Sw Pennsylvania | I've always been partial to wool gloves for winter steelhead fishing. Cut off fingers, and can get wet and still keep your fingers and hands warm. Doesn't hurt to have to a couple pair for the price.

Location: NorthCentral WI | This fall I wore some NFL receiver gloves and believe it or not they worked great. Not super warm but the "stickiness" worked awesome for casting/thumbing the spool and the backs are a very thin neoprene type material that at least keeps the water off. Granted I still had some mittens to throw on when moving spots. |

Location: Madison, WI | Used ALOT of them. Always would somewhat work but after a while the water always gets into the seams from palming a reel. The only ones i found that cover all the bases........waterproof, leakproof and dexterity

I got the mediums which are snug but i used them for 3 straight days during a tournament in the snow, cold and rain.....hands stayed bone dry. They look bulkier but they are pretty thin. I was fishing jerk baits all 3 days and no seepage or penetration. A little pricy at $65.00 bucks. I picked mine up at REI and they have a good return policy so I figured I would give them a hard 3 days and honestly....worth every penny. Dry hands = warm hands.
If your not sure, try them on at a retailer.
Yes, they actually work. It was so nice finding something that actually worked. |

| I used to do this the way a lot of guys do....having about 7-8 pairs of just the right kind of comfortable gloves and changing them out every half hour when they got wet and cold. Now I go to Fleet Farm, buy one inexpensive pair (under $20.00) of the textured waterproof rubber gloves they sell with the ice fishing stuff, and leave them on all day. With a little practice you change baits, open and close leader snaps...everything you assumed you would not be able to do including the right feel of the spool. They are certainly colder, but bone dry and no wind allows it to work. I gave a pair to a guy on a really cold day this fall who has been a Northwoods guide and baitmaker for 30 years and who said, "I can't fish with gloves." Now he does! |

Location: Contrarian Island | i agree w PredLur, I have yet to find a pair that don't soak thru eventually...including Seirus, Cabelas, Ice Armor, etc etc...might have to try those Mountain Hardwears...i tend to keep a bunch of pairs in the boat and just switch them out once they soak thru but it would be nice to find a pair that don't...

| I found a pair of gloves at K-mart of all places. They are made by Real Tree and are for hunting in rain. I casted all fall with these gloves and even after 9 hours my hands inside were still dry. Bring them in the house and put them by the heat vent and they would be dry the next day. They are thinner so they still let you control the spool and hold the rod while fighting fish but kept my hand pretty warm. |

Location: MN | Realtree doesn't actually make anything, they are a camo pattern licensor. So they were made by someone else, and idea of the manufacturer? They sound too good to be true - 9 hours and dry inside seems impossible. |

| I've found that XL Latex gloves over any cheap thin regular work gloves, work great. They waterproof any glove and they come in 100pk box. Add a 'Hot Hands' toe warmer to the back of your hand inside the latex glove and you're good to go all day. |
