I looking for suggestions on what cellular company gets great coverage in Vilas County. We currently have had AT&T out of Appleton here and my coverage is terrible at best up by our cottage (LVD). I hope to be able to have a plan that I can actually make phone calls out on lakes up there incase of an emergency and be able to see radar and forecasts on my smartphone.

Thanks for your suggestions!

I have Verizon, and I get excellent coverage in NW Vilas County. We're about 30 miles West of LVD, so I'm not sure if that coverage drops off at all as you head East.

My wife and I have Verizon and it seems like our coverage was ok in that area when we were over there this summer. With that said, I didn't make it to LVD so I'm not sure how it was there. I had no problem sending texts or calling my wife back at the truck on the "Bucks" or other lakes we fished in the area. It's pretty good for the most part in Hayward too. Our house seems to be a black hole for service, but anywhere else works fine.

We've got AT&T service and it is spotty out by us as well but we're in the national forest so there aren't any towers nearby - that goes for Verizon too. You might try mapping your address on this map to give you an idea. Good luck !

There is always the option for a cell/modem amp if you want to go that route. They work, and we have used them for several years storm chasing in the plains where there is nothing to be seen.

I have pretty much had them all, and US Cell and Verizon has the best service with a nod to Verizon. I get solid 3G service in Vilas and I even get 3G in my treestand in Taylor Cty. Works really great with the Navionics app on the iphone on the boat!!

Craig,

I just saw something on the news a couple nights ago about AT&T exploring the option of putting in some towers up there...so may want to wait to see if that goes through. Completely agree with you though...currently, AT&T is terrible up there right now. Not that it's always a bad thing for people not to be able to get a hold of you while you're fishing! Hope you and the family have a great Christmas!

We had a hard time with service in our cabin on the south shore. The trees and the hill made reception tough. In a boat 50 feet from shore all was well and the phones worked. This happened with 3 different cell companies.

Thanks again for the feedback. Our plan is up in mid January so it looks like we are going to go with Verizon. Also plan on getting the Navionics apps since it sounds like i'll be able to use it!

Merry Christmas to all!
