The Quantum Exo 6.6:1 is tall of a gear for DCG 10 and 8, I would get the 5.3:1 and use the Power Handle that comes with the reel. The 6.6:1 and the 7.3:1 I would use for fast line pickup for topwater or ripping baits.

this new reel intrigues me, especially for throwing 1-4 oz baits for tigers here in utah.. I love my revo toro and curado 300e, personally i would give up my curado before my revo. I too would like more insight and experience on the exo 300 in 6:6 and 7:3. My new revo nacl 50 hs is awesome and i love it

It's a super light reel, you're gonna love it. It has yet to be fished and tried much within the musky community.

The 300 size was primarily developed for the big bass addicts who chuck heavy swimbaits all day long and wanted huge line capacities. But will have a niche for sure.

I'm about to order the 300HPT and it's getting paired up with a 7ft9 'Croix Lip Stick. If it lives up to expectations, definitely gonna get another in different model.

Thanks for the input guys its either the exo or the new toro Nacl either way one is getting slapped on a sling blade! i relly would like to put the exo on there because of the weight factor, im just questioning its durability; thats only thing im worrried about. i have a curado 300e and that thing takes a beating and is still ready to haul! we will see how this plays out im looking forward to everyones reviews as far as the exo goes!!!!

There's not much to worry about this reel.
Drag is built to withstand with a combination of ceramic, carbon fiber, and stainless steel. Drive gear is alloy.... That's the important stuff.

One area which is always concerning to me with Quantum in general is the clutch assembly - had them go out on aged spinning reels and old casting reels predominantly in the PT series. Keep an eye on that as it's usually the first thing to on any Q reel I own. It won't surprise me if it goes out on the EXO - though for the money I would hope not. But it's an extremely easy fix if it wears out however. I've got a handful of reels that have been thru 2-3-4 clutches in their lifetimes and I still keep using them.

I've been questioning it too due to poor performance from prior quantums in years past. however given my current needs I'm about to order a fast ratio model for my new soon to be commissioned topwater rod. It's been many years since I've even touched a quantum product so maybe it's time to give them a second chance.

The Main and Pinion Gears are Brass, and this reel has DUAL ANTI REVERSE PAWLS just like a Tranx. Remember this reel is under 8oz in weight, so 4-5oz baits is it with the 300EXO
I love my 300 EXO in 5.3:1 I will use it in Canada for Pike with Grinders and Mepps

Is the exo frame connected to the reel foot via rivets? I read somewhere that the smaller ones were like that.
Yes and so are the 300, 400 Shimano Calcutta TE and D and B reels, all of the Daiwa Luna reels are and the Penn 965, 975 reels.

I looked at the smaller EXOs today. Very light reel which it don't feel nearly as smooth and refined as a Revo. But I may still get a 300 7.3:1

Really? I don't have a te in front of me right now, I do have an abu 6500 it looks like the reel foot is welded on. Ive seen the weld break on some of the 5500/6500 garcias. Are those rivets a problem in general?

Your right the 5500 - 6500 are weled on but all Shimano Calcutta, Trinidad reels and all Diawa Luna and Saltist reels have rivets.

I have a 300EXO in 5.3:1 gears that I super tuned and it very very smooth reel, even with 3oz Grinders with 8 Colorado blade.

Lightweight is nice especially if it stands up to abuse.

"Remember this reel is under 8oz in weight, so 4-5oz baits is it with the 300EXO"
Pikemaster - why do you think this is the case? With Alabama rigs and swimbaits, bass guys are certainly throwing things heavier than 4-5oz. Are you seeing/feeling vulnerabilities in your EXO300?

Because Musky guys are animals when it comes to reels, I can see a guy casting pounders with this reel and engaging the reel to stop the bait before it hits the water.
I have used my for baits up to 8 oz, Mag Dawgs and I love this reel, but when a reel is lightweight the parts are too and will not take abuse like a MUSKY guy will give a reel. This reel is only 7.5oz, most other Musky reels are 11 - 20oz

From my understanding, the weight savings are at least primarily due to the frame (not the main gear, pinion gear, or piece of the spool that engages the pinion). Do you know if the main gear, pinion or spool piece is of lesser quality than say a calcutta 400b (or even lesser weight for that matter)?

I would think stopping a pounder mid flight by engaging the reel would cause issues with any reel.

On the 300 the main and pinion gears are made from Brass, the drive shaft is a light weight alloy, as is the worm gear. For me using the reel for the last 2 months I like it alot and will use more of them next year for sure. On one outfit I have a 300 on it weighs in at 13.5oz for both the rod and reel, a Calcutta 400TE is over 12oz just for the reel.

Sure will, hopefully it'll be here tomorrow and I can try it saturday, plus I'm gonna be fishing a tournament first of next month to get some time on it. I'm pretty excited even given my reluctancy to use quantum products after prior experience.
