What type of boatside tricks to you use to get a nuetral fish to eat boatside instead of flicking you the fin.[:p]

I use an approach that when the bait is coming in I make sure its not coming in straight towards me. This can be done by cast angle and swinging the rod tip out towards the end of the cast. If the lure is coming in 3ft down I try to make the lure 5ft down at boatsite. That way when I sweep up high in the first corner of the eight its not as sharp of turn and it gives the fish a presentation that the bait is going high and away.

Most nuetral muskies react by kicking thier tail and taken advantage of the easy prey. Then I continue with a large wide corner and then drive down into the next corner and up again 6" to the surface. Almost all my fish eat with the bait high in the upper corners, which is great for it makes it easy to set the hook.

Jason- One boat side trick that definitely should be avoided!

When large fish inhales the bait at boatside- turning to your fishing partner & placing your forefinger to your lips & saying->
"Ssshhhhhhhhhh....I got a bite" [:0] [:((] [:knockout:] [] [:sun:]

The "Whoa.........cool!" approach doesn't work any better.

Seriously, I was at the Waukesha show when you did you presentation J. I have been trying to do my 8's like you showed. But, I STILL haven't caught a fish on an 8 yet.

When I spot a follow near the boat,
I tend to yank my lure out of the water and shout to my poartner:
"THERE'S ONE!"

Jason you explained it well for the eight, the other thing I do is what I call a surge. I do the same 8 as you but add some speed or surges to the 8. Most of the time I will add a burst of speed as the lure comes up from the first corner and then try it again when I go down after the second corner. I will add this to my eight if the fish doesn't eat the bait on the first figure eight, its just something different to add to your 8 to prevoke a strike. When you add speed it seems to trigger a strike when a simple 8 will not trigger them. Remember the bigger the fish the wider the 8 should be also the deeper and higher you should go on your 8's to give them more room to turn, you never want to do a sharp small figure 8 when a 45 inch plus fish is following your bait.[;)]

I agree with Mike here, I think speed can produce strikes from otherwise neutral fish.
One thing I do is to make a "BIG" circle and "NOT" an 8, a fish, especially a big fish can chase the lure a lot easier when you make a circle and not make any tight turns.
I will also bring the bait to the surface, have you ever seen a Musky chasing shad at the top of the water, the shad come flying out of the water trying to escape the JAWS OF DEATH. Think about it, when a Musky is chasing bait fish, the bait fish dont hang around, they get the hell out of there, in a "HURRY". Sometimes speed can be the ticket.[;)]

Few things that work sometimes for me are, with floating lures stop retrieving and let it float to the surface, if the fish is active it usually nails it before it hits the surface. If inactive and comes up after it slowly they sometimes follow into a 8 after that. One more thing is kind of a in the water, out of the water 8, had about mid to upper 40 inchs range fish come charging out of a reed bed from about 30 feet away and stopped just a few feet away and then went back in (very clear water).
