Let's say you caught a big fish. 50#. And it happened to be on a small lake that really doesn't get much pressure, the kind of lake where you can fish all day and not see another boat. You get a nice picture of the fish, length and girth measurements, and send it back on its way. Now what?

I have to say I'd probably show the picture to a few close friends, not tell them the name of the lake, and go on about my fishing. No lunge log entry, no internet pictures, certainly never mention the name of the lake. It would be tough not to brag about a 50# fish, but when that 50# fish was there because the lake is far enough off the beaten path where few people know about it? Yeah, sorry. What fish?

I'd share it with the M1st, MuskyLink, and MuskyHunter communities. I'd share the every detail except the lake name. Anyone who was more than an acquaintance of mine, and asked privately, I would tell which lake, provided 1)I had 'discovered" the lake more or less on my own, and didn't owe my fishing there to someone else's personal advice and 2) They agreed not to tell anyone else. If I got burned and noone kept their word, I might change my approach for the next 50#er. Haha next 50#er. That kinda has a nice ring to it!

I made the mistake of taking a friend to a "secret lake" in my younger days. One of those "park on a dirt road and walk through the woods" lakes... I told them that I had an "understanding" with the owners of the property. The "undersdanding" was that I fished there and they knew about it, but since I released everything I caught and left the place as I found it nobody said anything.

Fast forward a few weeks...
I was minding my own business, fishing, and the owner came roaring up in his truck, jumped out and immediately started cussing me out about garbage, and fires, loud music, beer cans all over... I tried to explain that I had no idea what he was talking about, because at the time I had no idea. Then he said "If I ever see you here again, I am going to put a bullet in your head! And tell that red headed son of a b---- friend of yours I'll shoot him too!" That's when it all started to make sense. It turns out said "friend" got a few carloads of guys together, drove out there, and proceeded to have a grand old time, involving a bonfire, a fish fry, lawn chairs thrown in the lake, several cases of beer, (the remnants of which also wound up in the lake) car stereos blasting, dead fish floating, fireworks, illegal drugs, and garbage thrown all over.

I never went back, but as I was putting my stuff back in my car I said "hey, I'll tell you what. If you see that read headed SOB out here again, you let me know. I'll bring a shovel.

Mmm Hmm. THAT won't happen again.

Why you wouldnt want to share the details of a special fish is kind of silly.I get a kick out of converting people into musky fishing and seeing the look in their faces when they finally get one. Ive converted a group of 17 guys who used to fish with light gear and tackle into muskie nuts. Now that being said..I fish every season of the year and love and share my spots with whoever cares to listen..Keeps me looking for new spots to keep me ahead of the game thats all.

50 pounds not very big - dime a dozen. I released one from Moon River 56x27 and i rarely fish for muskies.

If it weighed 60 pounds would have clubbed it like a seal. Formulas do not work on long fish unless girth is head to tail and you measure fish middle of tail.

Well, that's my first headshake of the morning. sigh.

Anyway, I would tell the story, proudly. I work wayyy more than I fish....my trips are limited and so is my time spent. But I love being on the water. And IF I was fortunate enough to net a fish of this size, I would CPR it....and tell my story. Why not?

Most won't believe me anyway.

Tell the story.

Of course. Get things in perspective. Report the catch to Lunge Log. You would want fellow anglers to do the same for you. You are unlikely to ever see the fish again. Share your photos and the story. Its okay to Lake X it. But you're not talking about national security. This is just a fish story.

The Muskie Police are here.

'Your only concern'? What, you own all the fish everywhere now all by your little lonesome?

I don't think so. That's a freaking 12 year old kid, and it doesn't seem like he comes from a family of serious Muskie anglers. Those muskies are not just there for us elitists.

This kind of negativity doesn't help the cause.

i think even if the lake is huge and even if most of the anglers are pro cpr, damage will occur when pressure is too heavy. this is one of the numerous reason that make me think it's not a good idea to tell a location.Imho there is no possible comparison when you look at the plus vs the minus.
Everybody should do the same thing.
For those who prefer to tell where they catch their big fish i really wonder what they have to gain?
Maybe they just prefer to fish in the middle of a crowds instead of just 2 or 3 other boats,at least it make more guys to speak with

m60,
The word will get out anyway, this ain't 1982 anymore and unless you are on water no one knows about, one big fish doesn't cause much trouble. A half dozen, folks will take notice, and unless it's YOU catching them all, your silence idea won't fly. This is a social sport in alot of ways.

If you don't want to talk about your fish, fine, don't. If I get one and want to, I guess I will, and don't need anyone's approval to.

So count me out of your 'everybody'...if I choose.

That said, some times I wouldn't give the exact location, I fish alot of tiny lakes.

I understand your argument and wouldve let the fish go (and any other big fish I catch) myself pending nothing happened to cause it to die during the catch...but hes 12 and lets be realistic, a 58" muskie is around as big as they get and most of 'em don't live too long after that anyways so do I have a problem with it, the odds of that fish making it through the winter for you to catch next season arent too great anyways...I used to have a problem with it and get all bent out of shape about it, but now I think killing a 40s fish is much worse because it doesnt offer the possibility that that fish will reach lengths like 58".

Possible State record or not, it would be CPR'd after a couple pics so it can die of old age. I don't need to prove a record the size really only matters to me

I would take a few pictures and then release it. Then I would contemplate getting a replica, but most likely would be way to cheap to actually pay for one. Besides, my wife says that she is OK with me having one fish replica in the house - ever. And then I just might catch an even larger fish, maybe even the same fish, and do the same routine all over again. Picture, release and only think about a replica. Been there. Done that.

As for telling people? Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. My wife sometimes thinks that I don't need to fish for a while after I catch a big fish, so sometimes it's better to not tell anyone. I find it is often best to just fish and enjoy the time on the water. Whether I catch nothing, a big fish or something in between, I still have fun.

There will come a time where funds may be needed for the conservation issues on said water, not showing there is a presence of big muskies and fishermen in presuit could mean no funds when needed.I would post the picture and tell all about it.

MAYBE IN USA BUT IN CANADA IT'S COMPLETELY ANOTHER STORY,WE LIKE HOUR SPOT QUIET THAT'S WHY LOT'S OF SPOT ARE ONLY KNOWN BY THE LOCAL,AND IT WILL STAY LIKE THAT FOR I HOPE A LONG TIME.GOOD LURE TEND TO ALSO STAY A LOT MORE SECRETS,MAYBE IT'S JUST BECAUSE HERE THERE IS NO BIG MONEY TO MAKE IN THE MARKET.WHEN SOME INFO ARE REVEALED YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO ASK YOUTRSELF 1 QUESTION,WHO WILL GET THE BENEFIT? THE LURE MAKER OR THE SPONSORED ANGLER?I KNOW A COMPANY FROM USA WHO MAKE LURES AND PUBLISH A LOT OF GIANTS THAT CAME FROM HOUR LOCAL WATERS ,GUESS WHAT NONE OF THESE GIANTS HAVE BEEN CAUGHT ON THE MENTIONED LURES,AND IT'S NOT A RARE THING TO OCCURS ,SO WHEN THERE ARE SO MANY GENEROUS ANGLERS SUGGEST BAITS I TEND TO BE SKEPTICAL.............

How would  you know it weighed 50#

Top 10 signs you may have a 50# fish in the boat:

10. Wider than your boots
9. Over 55"
8. 28" girth or larger
7. Can't get your hand around the tail
6. Looks like it ate a small dog
5. You were honestly worried about breaking your rod and reel
4. You had to look at it in the net for a minute to decide if you really wanted to reach in there or not
3. You have to bear hug it or set it on your lap for a picture
2. Your lure is sideways in it's mouth and none of it is sticking out

and the #1 sign you might have a 50# fish in the net:

1. It's is significantly larger than all the other 50# fish you have ever seen pictures of

Being serious for a moment... I've always figured that I'd put in a call to the DNR, tell them I had a potential record, and figure out a way to keep the fish alive until they got there. In the livewell it goes. From there? Most resorts have a giant aerated bait tank. Weigh it, measure it, do what you have to do. Then it goes back where it came from.

LR: Actually Sled, it wasn't a "replica" of the fish, but rather a mock up of the taxidermist's "gross enhancement" of a 54 inch fish made to look like the phoneyed up mount of Spray's bogus "record".

Yep, that bogus WR was an enormous phony, 'er fish, but as we have since learned, they just don't get that big! Fun to look at and dream though...

Beat it with an AR 15 stock about the head, drag it across the parking lot with a Boga, take bad pictures and claim the fish is 200 pounds, and grill the stupid thing in chunks and feed it to the coyotes out in my back 20.

Or, CPR, post the image, and call it a day.
