I am looking for some feedback from anyone who has used these 2 reels. Specifically, I am interested to the size of the 2 and the pull you feel when retrieving lures. I have the St Croix and want to get a new reel similar in size that is faster but can handle 8's and occasionally 10's with about the same effort or less. Thanks

The 300D has a 5.6:1 gears and 30" of line pickup, which I have and 8 blades are the max for the reel, as the 400D has 5.1:1, and 27" of line pickup, only 3" less then the 300D but will handle DCG 10 all day long.
The Avid is a great reel but with no Anti - Reverse Pawl as a backup for the A/R Bearing, you can't use the reel for Jerk Baits or Ripping.

I use my AC300 for ripping tubes and jerks all the time with no issue. Has this happened to you?

I'm glad your Avid has worked out for you, I know I replaced over 50 A/R Bearings in Luna and StCroix reels last year alone. Like I said it is a greart reel but it has NO A/R Pawl as a backup for the A/R Bearing so when it goes out your handle will spin backwards, most other reels like the Calcutta both the TE, D, B have Pawls as well as the Toro reels. On the new Quantum 300 EXO it has a Dual Pawls for a backup to the A/R Bearing as well as the Tranx.
I recommend to anyone that has a Luna or StCroix to use your thumb on the spool on ripping and on hooksets.

I agree with PIKEMASTER. Disaster waiting to happen. Personally,I won't even consider a reel without an a-r pawl as a backup to a a-r bearing. When it comes down to it ,although it would feel odd in this day and age, I would rather have the pawl system over the bearing if I had a choice of only one a-r system.

Sorry ,forgot to say, go with the new 400d. Right up there with the te except alot smaller feeling without being smaller in capacity or strength. 300d-- only thing better is a 400d.

I have experienced the same as Pikemaster, The Daiwa lunas I had for repair, all needed a new IAR bearing.

But IMO, if you like a reel like the Avid or Luna, it will function very well if you take care of it, also for ripping. Personally I have fished the Okuma Akena(a single Kouyo IAR like the Avids) for tree seasons now, ripping everything from Cisco kids, to Pounders on it, and I have did not have to change the IAR yet.

But if you do not use the right lube for the IAR bearing, it will slip(especially in cold weather as the steel contracts) or because of microscopic wear added to the sleeve and rollers over time. This year I have used CorrosionX, and I do not have any slipping on yet on my Akena so far.
