Big fish vs Small fish

I've been thinking lately about why I catch so many Muskies between 28 and 38 inches. A couple things I came up with are, and, a few may sound off base. Once a fish reaches 25 inches, the mortallity rate should be next to zero, unless, it is put on the wall, or in the pan, or a bad release. If this is true, then, there should be more pigs hooked. I contend that there may be, more bigger fish, but, they feed in places, and on diets, that the kids don't. (put a kid and Shaq in front of a candy store and an all you can eat buffet and they will go in different doors). Could it be that the smaller fish are eating bass, perch, and bluegills, in the shallows, and, the big girls are chasing the silver and gold of the sisco and suckers down deep?

Yes. I don't have time to get into details but yes big fish are a different bread then small ones. You need to not only find their favorite hunting grounds but what they like to eat as well as to how their prefer the presentation.

I can tell you that I catch more fish over 50 inches then under 30, well actualy over 52 inches. [:p]

Yes Jon, I've found (during the summer/early fall) the big girls and smaller fish have 2 different addresses. In the fall you'll see the all sizes in the same area. This has to do with the forage all converging in the same place.

Another thing you may want to do is change the lakes you fish since they may not be capable of producing a large amount of larger fish due to water quality, size, or forage. You may also want to check with the DNR and see what year classes they have in the lake from stocking. I know tonka had a great year class about 5-6 years ago and we've got a ton of fish between 35-38" right now. Last year they were between 33-35" so this year they should be around the 40" mark [:sun:] .

I think it's a combination of location and the fact that in many waters there are just more fish in that 30" range. Alot to consider, longjevity, growth rates, ect. Each lake or river is different.
