I've got several TE's I want to send in for service and minor repair this winter. Looking for a suggestion on the best place to send them.

I also have 4 of the TICA SS Seaspirit line counter trolling reels. Same question on those.

Chuck Brod at Sportsman's Repair in Mosinee.

I like to give local guys (Chuck) my business for broken rod guides but c'mon man. Otherwise pull the thing apart, clean it, put on fresh lube, it really isn't that hard. There are tutorials online for just about every reel. You might even learn something.

When I stopped doing my own reels I started sending them to Viking Rod & Reel in Nisswa, Mn. Never have had any problems. Sounds like Al is thinking on retiring from being retired in the northwoods though... ?
This year I bought a Toro here on the forum that Pikemaster had gone through. It would appear to me that he did a top quality job on the reel and would reccomend either of these guys to my close friends. Jake

I've always done my own maintenance and repairs.

I think you'll find that if you are careful and take your time, replacing any part of a reel should be preety easy. A few tips:

As you take the reel apart, place all the parts in the order in which you took them off, facing the direction they were assembled. Use the reel schematic. If there's anything you are unsure/frightened of, take a picture of it before you take it apart so you can see how it goes together.

I will admit to having a few instances where I was ready to send Pikemaster a box full of parts, but 9 years and a dozen reels later, so far I have not had a reel I couldn't fix myself. I will probably get to the point where it's just easier to send them off, and Pikemaster will get all my repairs. But the experience of tearing down, cleaning, lubing and reparing many different reels has been worth the effort. I've had several reels go down in the course of a trip and being able to tear them down and fix them on the boat has been a godsend. Being able to fix them on the fly has saved the day more than a few times.

I couldn't agree more. Once you do it a few times it will become second nature.

Interestingly enough I was recently talking with an older gentleman and he was telling me his perspective on the younger generation and how we've all become so tech savvy, yet lack many basic mechanical skills. With more people than ever getting college degrees, no one knows how to turn a wrench anymore. I found it somewhat amusing yet very true and this thread reminded me of that discussion. Anyways, I'm confident most people could do it themselves and that may not necessarily be the issue (ability). Depending on the amount of use of course, reels should be torn down, cleaned and relubed much more often than once a year. Maybe that's just me.

Last year I got over 100 reels in parts sent to me LOL LOL
Some reels are very easy say a ABU 5500 6500 but to tear open a SHIMANO 400TE Good Luck
For $24.00 send it to me I tear reel down 100 % and use a Ultra Sonic Cleaner on the Parts and the Bearings I pull open the shields and then all Bearings get a 30 -60 min soak in the U/Sonic Clearner. Then I ck all parts for wear or any upgrades for that reel, then I polish all the contract points then put the reel back together with a Polar Bonding Lube and Corrosion Inhibiting Grease. Sometimes I spend over 3 hours on a reel to get it right.
Now is the time to send me your reels after Jan I get very busy. I should be at all the shows this year so U can drop them off and save on postage.

I am not sure it has to do with not being able to turn a wrench, at least for me it is time management. I have other things I would like to do that work on reels. Either spend time with the family, work on the house, fly fish, snowboard, mountain bike. When I retire I will probably get back to "turning" a wrench on my reels, but now I want to get outside:) BR

BenR, I understand that and was not saying that was the case with you or anyone else on this thread. I was making a generalization for younger people these days. Don't take it the wrong way. Any comments on cleaning a reel only once a year? I can honestly say my main use reels are pulled apart nearly once a month to keep things running smooth.

Yes $24.00 plus $8.00 for return shipping
I grease the bearings on reels like your Saltist so the bearings will stay lubed for over a year.

I get so many calls from guys leaving on there trip in a couple days and have open up their reels, and have called me to help them put it back together, some of the calls last for over a hour !!!!!!
Like I said ABU 5500 and 6500 are very easy but most other Musky reels don't do it if you never have before.
I always have the reel Schematic to view when I'm working on a reel, and most guys have no idea what a Schematic is or where to find it.
