Anyone ever cut the hooks off the reef hawg and put split rings on them?

Why? They run better with the 774 eagle claws attached straight to the bait by cotter pins.

I would guess you are talking about the 6" Reef hawg. Have not bought one for  over 20yrs, but back then, you had to buy 5 to get one to run good, and sag a bit in the water column. Wood densities were the cause for these inconsistencies.

Frustrated with that, it was time to modify them. I cut the 2 center hooks off. The two holes where you cut the hooks were the weighting points. A strategic size in lead to each of the holes was the key to having this bait swing and dance side to side. Then, placing a long screw eye in the middle of those 2 weight points and a 5/0 L774 splitringed worked awesome. Also; did split ring the rear hook with a 3/0. So, only 2 hooks were needed for this 6", + it was very much leverage free with the split rings. Added rattles, clearcoat, and, glitter made this one deadly bait.

The Late, Dick Wanasek from MW marine had me modify, 4 - 9 of those yearly. He said every one ran good after the modification, and deep, which he liked...;)
