Has anyone ever tried fishing small suckers through the ice for musky?

When we get good enough ice at the end of the season it works, some lakes better than others.

I thought about trying it this year. But I was thinking more like big suckers.

But you can fish for big pike! I've never tried but sure would be fun to pull a muskie through the ice.

Seen it happen. Not as fun as it sounds. Plus, it can be unhealthy for the fish with below freezing temps. You could easily damage their gills by freezing them. I've never caught one through the ice but I know plenty of people who have. I just figure I'll save the muskies for open water and give them a much needed rest in the winter. Oh, and its generally illegal in MN.

If you Catch and release pike through the ice with enjoyment i cant see it not being fun I got a small tiger through the ice on an otherwise pikeless day a few years back and that put a smile on everyones face. If its within season go for it.

It's probably not an issue if the weather is nice though. Probably safer than in summer actually.

Caught my first Musky through the ice New Years Eve 2011. We were trying for northern, using large minnows.

Getting her through the 8" hole was a little tricky. The time for a pic was very brief and the release was a challenge (You just shoot them into the hole and off they go).

Pic Attached.

Funny, I never targeted them but I considered them a nuisence in the winter fishing for Walleye. They eat my expensive Shiners, make a mess of the lines, and they are a pain to try and get thru the hole.
