Ok Guys Thought this might be fun???!!!!
If you can't fish them play a little
"Arm Chair Muskie Guide".....
Tomarrow, two clients from Atlanta and I are going to be pounding water here on the CAVE. It's been somewhat tough for the past few weeks...Tomarrow shows a warming trend..Sunny and up to 45 degrees (8 degrees below normal), average temp the last week has been a high of 34
(18 degrees off average). Water temps are 43 down from 48 last week (almost 10 degrees off the norm). Snow and ice on the ground, after I break thru a litte ice around the landing,WHAT DO I DO TO PUT THIS GUYS ON MUSKIES??!!%#@*
Obiviously these conditions are way off norm considering last year we were in T-Shirts at this time.
Any Ideas????? Lures...Presentations...Structure...Depth
Hope everyone replies....I'll check for advise before I hit the water but if you don't reply in time still do it might be fun to see if your tactics paid off. I'll give a report tomarrow night.

Can you soak suckers down there. If so, soak a sucker and throw some slow gliders. Undertakers, Squirkos etc. Maybe a bigger twitch 8 or 10 inch Slammer or so. Fishing the steep breaks or any deep green weeds you can find.

Hey Tony you lucky SOB at least you have an open season, and soft water to fish some skies. Right now I'm already stir crazy and it's just the start of the winter. Looks like I'll be driving the girlfriend nuts this winter again.he,he,he.
If you can get meat I'd try to hang a few of them on some quick strike rigs and work the breaks and areas where the hard bottom meets the soft(bottom transition areas). Creek channels and areas where the creeks dump into the lake. If suckers are tough to come by for ya I wouldn't hesitate trying to slow roll some bulldawgs. Giving some good ole pops on the dawgs as they are retrieved to the boat. Making sure to really watch the line on the pause. Pause may be the key especially for those ornery ones that are just eyeballing the bait. I always seem to have the best luck in cold front conditions by making sure to have a long deliberatte pause. Plastic baits also seem to really shine during the colder water temperatures(Shallow Invader may also be used if the fish are moving up onto the shallows during a warming trend or the sun's rays). On bright, sunny days the fish will move up shallow upon rocky or sandy shelfs. While on overcast they'll move deeper off the breaks.

Since you know Cave Run like the no other, I'd work on fishing the high percentage spots more deliberately. The windows will usually be short during cooler water temps, but you can also have some pretty good luck in those short feeding windows. Good luck and I hope you guys nail a slob.

catch ya later,
Krappie

Tony,

That's just rude! I'm surrounded by ice and you're complaining about 43 degree water?! Maybe I should be at the Cave.

OK enough kidding, 8" Jake bangin' wood in 15-20 FOW. Pull - pause - twitch. Repeat.

As mr. Worrall would put it.........Creatures on the stones. That is if you can find any rocks down there in all that wood. Good Luck Tony. Wish I could be there to help in person.

Tony,
Steep breaks, sloooooooow moving jerkbaits, looong pauses, especially at the boat.
Good luck,

Steep breaks next to shallow (1-2') sand/rock bars. Sinking cranks, jerkos, bulldawgs and small gliders get the nod.

But then again...

How about The Flats and Parking Lot breaks and Big and Little Cave Run with a squirko and a Suick and a sucker?

I've fished the Cave many times when it's been super cold. If I recall the presentations that caught fish were dead heads in the timber fields, depth raiders thrown tight to the bank which had really steep drop offs, and jerk baits in the coves. Everything shallow or on the shallow side of deep breaks. That's where the active fish were found.

I would troll the deep channels with large baits. You may not catcha lot of them that way but the few will be worth the trip. [:sun:]

So Tony, what did you do and how did it work?

Sorry for the late post, just got my truck unstuck from the ice.....Us southerners don't know how to drive on this stuff. We started the day at 12 degrees spending an hour getting the boat thru an inch of ice that had froze it up in Longbow Marina.
First of all I tried about everything I know and some of the helpful hints you guys gave me....Weather was perfect, sunny highs around 45 and a slight wind. Water temps around 42.
No luck on suckers which we pulled all day, however they got a little nervous a couple of times. Pounded the water all day in a variety of spots with a variety of lures...slow, slower...faster????
However at 5:05 about 30 minutes before dark working a weed bed in 2 feet of water on Skidmore point in Beaver Creek my client Greg Gregory got a 30.5 incher not pounds on a Super Shad Rap in a natural shad pattern. Seemed the fish was on the inside edge of the weeds. I had met Gregg at Herbies Place, Andy Meyers Lodge this past summer on his first muskie trip. Greg had caught several trolling up there on a remote lake, but never one casting. Although a small fish Gregg and his buddy John were very happy after pounding the water for hours and finally Greg landing his first muskie casting and John got to see one caught. None of the other guides had any luck and we talked to several other boats at the end of the day and knowbody had any action. We were lucky... These southern muskies don't like the cold just like the southern anglers, we are wimps I guess. Will2's method paid off earlier in the week in the spots sputterbug mentioned for my friend Kevin Nash but not yesterday. Rich we didn't troll, my client Greg said trolling was like kissing your sister, which southerers know a lot about....LOL.
Phishin I remember your trip down here a couple of years ago. However we didn't try your method though, I mean the one where you jumped into the colddddd.....water up to your neck for a photo with the first muskie that you ever caught with the lure in YOUR mouth....Great Photo, I believe Gregg Thomas uses it on his brochure and I have it hanging in every room in my lodge and bait store. Thanks for the ARTWORK. It was as cold as that day but we had a dry ride home unlike you.
Thanks for the post guys I wish I had more info to share about the day.

Hey Tony! I live around and fish the Cave all the time. But i was wondering where around the Cave do you get the suckers? How much do they cost? Also how do you rig yours? Thanks again Tony!!!!!!!
