No offense meant, but why waste time building something already available, well made, in a wide array of colors and 3 different sizes, and both pre weighted or un weighted models?
Even if you work at McDonalds, putting in a few extra hours work will probably get you a bait in less time that it would take to tool up to make one. If you want to make baits I would encourage you to design something for yourself that you think might work rather than trying to copy an already successful model that is readily and economically available any place in the country. If you are just cheap, like I am, check the swap and trade columns on any of the muskie boards and you can probably get a suick within a month in good condition for $8-9 including shipping, or go to e-bay and start checking. If the bait you get is the wrong color just paint it black.

I have done it before and they worked, little crude...but they worked.

If I was you...I would make sure they had rounded backs and a flatter nose like the original Suicks.[;)]

I'm sure you can make one at home if you have a shop like you say.

I say, go for it and good luck!
There's always satifaction in catching fish on you own lures.

Surf around for some good pictures and finding the right wood is important. After you've made a few you can modify your own. There is no feeling like putting a pig in the basket with your own lure! Loads of pleasure on those cold mornings.[]

Is $12.00 to much to pay for a lure? If so you need to get out of Musky fishing! Go on E-bay and look, they always have Suicks for sale.

Do you only have a couple of baits? Musky fishing is expensive, get used to it and buy the lure. Buy a couple of them. I personally have about 7 or 8 Suicks, not once did I complain about the price.

So do you think that buying hundreds and hundreds of musky lures is crazy? $12.00 is not that much, hell you can't even get a good 12 pack for $12 bucks anymore.

I made one 10" and one 6" suick (not regular sizes but I tried to make one myself). The 6" keeps swimming to one side, no matter how I try to tune it, the 10" swims like a glider. Just continuous pulls of 6-8" long and keep the rythm up. It glides side to side (a floater but dives to 2 feet deep) in a glide path of about 2 feet wide. I thought I would catch only larger sized pike on it, but so far I took a few pike of 50-60cm on it nd one of 41cm that hammered it right in front of my feet. To be honest I thought it would fall off the hooks. Its mouth was too small for the size 2/0 hooks that were on it. LOL!

Nothing beats the fun of catching on your own handmade lures.

And yes, I do fish with original suicks as well, they work great actually.

Jeff, good for you! The only thing I can say is trial and error. If you have a suick, you can your new one off of that for a start. I believe they are made of pine so there's your material. You'd probably be better off using a screw in hook hanger (much easier). Keep the hooks and attachment eye lined up as exact as you can.

One recomendation is to make the front lip hand down another 1/8" like the old ones. They always worked better in my oppinion.

ive bought 15$ lures before. 10 and 15 bucks for alure is too much. when you count my excab silverado , gas tire, ins, plates, tax, [here in west vir. theyve screwed us into taxing the same vehicle every, yes every year]. then when you count a boat, trailer tax every year again, batterys electric motors, depth finders and everything else. then when you count 25 buck spools of braid and 150 st croiz rod and 70 reels and leaders. right there is over 20000 $ !!! just too fish. i dare say that anybodt who thinks im cheap has ever tried to earn a dollar on wva. come try it. Ive had people call me cheap and not offer a red cent on gas when they go fishing in my 20000 worth of stuff. those peopledont go with me very often. and as far as it being a waste of time, if snow is flying and im sitting home, what the smartest thing to do watch tv or try to make 12$ lures??? thanks for the replys!!!!
