Location: Canada | Allright, I'm in the market for a reel to throw mags and pounders with. My original thoughts are to go with a Shimano TE. I've been doing some reading (used the search here and have looked elsewhere also) and want to know if the Okuma Isis will hold up to throwing mags/pounders, will the new Calcutta D work (my problem here is that it is cheaper than than the TE but being new will it hold up? you get what you pay for right?) or should i just keep looking for a used lefty TE or man up and buy one new for more than the new D is selling for? |

Location: Sussex, NJ | Isis 400lx. Same league as a 401te and you save enough money to buy extra pounders |

IMO You will probably be fine with either of the too, but there are some pros and cons. Time will tell if the D lives up to the TE, but Shimano selden makes major errors. In your case I would choose the Calcutta 401D if you can't find the TE.
ISIS:
Pros: Cheaper, Better handle(power handle), carbon drag washers
Cons: lower quality materials than the TE, no SS bearings, smaller gears(will wear quicker)
Calcutta TE:
Pros: Strong drop down gears, SS bearings, exelent quality materials, made in japan.
Cons: Expensive, no powerhandle out the box, engage easily in cast with some types of PW handles, Dartanium drag washers

Location: Canada | There's a local store here with a new in the box 401TE but it's more $ than the new 401 D is selling for. Pretty sure I'd have to wait for both, the 401 D or the Isis but I can get them ordered.
Killerbug - exactly the post I was looking for, I also went back and found your reel review on EsoxHunt

Location: Perryville, MO | Check a few of the larger buy and sell bass fishing forums. Every once in a while a 400 size TE will pop up. A few guys out West use them for throwing large swim baits in trout water. My guess is a bunch of guys in that crowd will want to switch to the D because they could easily get away with using a 300D at a fraction of the size/weight.

Location: Latitude 41.3016 Longitude 88.6160 | On the TE reels say right around $85.00 I can rebuild it with new gears, drive shaft, bearings, pawls and add a bearing to the spool and new drag washers and the reel will be smoother then NEW. The big thing on a used TE reel is make sure it was not used for SALT WATER. |

Location: Perryville, MO | Pikemaster...thanks for making the point about saltwater. I've discovered that to be a somewhat common experience with "bass" guys. Whether its used for stripers in both fresh and salt water or it just happens to be largest reel a guy owns and on an occasional trip it's used in salt. I've turned down a couple for that very reason. |

| There's not much difference in weight between 300d -400d -300te-400te . I have several te's and a 300 'n' 400D .The "D" series are very sweet reels .The 300te also very sweet. The 400/401 te ,now that's the reel of the gods ! The Okuma does have a place in all this. It's a good reel to buy(off shelf) should you have to order a Shimano. Use it untill your Shimano comes in.Since you obviously had the good sense to order a Shimano ,D or TE, I assume you had the good sense to spool the Okuma with good line. PP slick 8 ,best, Cortland Master braid, second to best, spool your new Shimano directly off the Okuma. The used section will be on the inside. then whoever you dump the old okuma on can buy their own line and start the cycle of life all over again. |

Location: Canada | Looking to sell my Avet JX right now to come up with the rest of the cash I need but pretty much decided on buying the new Calcutta TE. I like the new D but not sure anyone around here has one in a lefty and still not convinced it's as bulletproof of a big rubber reel as the TE has proved itself. |

Location: Grand Rapids, MI | I've been very happy with the performance of the Isis as a pounder reel over the last couple years. The reel on my Big Dawg has at least 600 hours on it so far without an issue, just the occasional need for a little drink of oil and a taste of grease. It's not as smooth as some but it is bulletproof so far and I'll take that any day over smooth. |

| Here's a little more info. about the Shimano's. The 300D is more like a heavy duty Curado 300E /300EJ. The palming side of the D is smaller in diameter than the handle side making it feel like more of a low profile reel than a round reel with the line capacity about equal. Although both Curado's have a higher gear ratio, the D's spool has a larger diameter which keeps the inch per handle turn retrieve close. In all, I don't regret buying the 300D. Comfortable, fast and powerful. The 400D,wow!, great reel. But, the one thing I couldn't get out of my head while waiting for my 400D to be delivered was how could the 400TE possibly be improved to warrent buying a new reel. I don't regret buying a new reel. I just wish it would have been another 400TE. Hell ,who can't use an extra TE. In fairness to the "D" . Like I said ,it's a great reel, comfortable to use, really smooth and if you never owned a 400TE you would swear it's the greatest reel ever made. |
