I'm attempting to make some leaders and was wondering what Knot you guys use? I tried the Lee Tauchen knot (4 loops and thread line thru loops). What is a good knot to use? Thanks in advance.

would a palomar knot work? Also do you crimp them or just use a knot

Perfection loop to snap and a two turn clinch to swivel.
Make sure you lubricate the clinch ALOT and hold the leader in one hand and the SWIVEL, NOT the tag end, in one hand and then give a quick hard pull to synch it well.

I use a big game knot and crimp. I put the tag end through the loop two times and snug them up and use a double crimp to make them slip proof. If you search the knot on google most show putting the tag end through the loop 3 times. This is more than enough so i go with 2.

Been using the knot Lee Tauchen uses. Not sure of the name. I don't know what my problem is though as I have troubles tying it as I have one loop that always wants to slide over the hook, snap, or whatever I am tying the knot to. I get over it by pushing that loop over where it should go, but that can be a pain.

I've also done the loop knot, which is way easier, but I don't care for the loop personally.

If you want to attach the floro to your mainline with a knot I use the double uni knot.

Here is a post I started a little while ago about the same subject.

Stealth uses a nail knot and then crimps the tag end. Crimping is your perogative but I get along fine with just the nail knot.

I use the Lee Tauchen/Nail Knot & crimp the tag. I just made up a couple tonight for my Sunday trip. Before I crimp the tag ends I use nails to attach to my swivel & snap then give a good hard pull to get the knots tight then crimp.

palamar knot, dab of super glue and flare the tag end with a torch. NEVER failed me!

OK I have to ask as it doesn’t make sense to me and I have seen many post this same thing through the years. Why the use of super glue on a knot you cinch up tight? It will not make the knot stronger. Only thing I can think of is it would keep the knot from unraveling in which case means you have a poor knot to begin with.

it depends on the leader material you are using, 80lb is way easier to tie ( i have not used it yet, some do )
I use 130 lb and use a perfection loop and add a crimp on the tag end after the knot is tied for insurance
I just tied four more leaders last week without the crimps and I feel the knot will hold without the crimps
I did flare the tag end with a lighter ( be careful not to damage main line)

I honestly do it cause a fellow member in my club showed me. Not sure if it makes a difference.. I guess just another level of security?? Flaring tag ends could be seen as overkill to but i guess why not, it could save a fish. If it works it works and the 2 seconds it takes for glue, i sleep better. haha.

I only wish I could tie a Lee T. knot. Just kidding,no need to. Never had a dbl crimp (copper) fail. I have retrieved lures with 4x 5/0 hooks by slowly pulling line ,straightening out the hook. Leader didn't fail. I know of 1 famous writer who talked against floro leaders because of potential failure.Non-sense, use care, check your finished leader out before using it. You won't have any problems. Leader failure happens because the maker fails to use care. Nipping the leader when trimming for example. The methods for actually tying them are limitless but using a dbl sleeve properly is neater, easier, doesn't fail ,there is just no need to tie.The famous writer I referred to did a 180 when his x-boss started selling them.note:when you see a leader for sale that's knotted, crimped, and glued it's to try to justify the cost.

I would be more cautious with the cross-loc snaps breaking from changing baits over and over. They will fatigue and fail, if you don't change them out every so often. With the big game knot i use i can change them without tossing the the leader and making another. Also with the big game knot, you get a double loop of fluro through your swivels and snaps. The Palomar knot does this also and i use that knot for all other fish types. On my Muskie leaders i put the tag end through the loop two times and snug them up and use a double crimp to make them slip proof. Most sites show the big game knot using 3 passes with the tag end but that only adds more twist to your knot.

Please stop calling a Nail Knot a Lee Tauchen Knot. The Nail Knot has been around way longer than anyone posting here!

Buy a tie-fast knot tyer tool from the "big a" store and you will be money. Watch the youtube clip if you have any questions on how to tie the knot. It is very easy and you can tie 200 lbs fluorocarbon without a problem. Just make sure you use a pliers and not your teeth went you sinch the knot down. Ciscokid- your not tying the knot correctly if you have a loop issue. Please do knot mention this topic again and do not call it the "Lee Tauchen" knot. That hippie doesn't need the attention.
