Location: Chaska MN. | I was wondering when most of you change your motor oil is it in the spring before the season or do you do it in the fall before storage, i know to do the lower unit before storage and have always done the motor oil at the same time but my buddy tells me that i should be doing it in the spring so that the oil wont get old sitting over the winter. Well what do you guys do? |

Location: New Hope MN | Save time and do it before storage. Oil does not go bad sitting in a clean environment. |

Location: Maine Township, MN | It's a good idea to change the fluids out at the end of the season because of corrosive compounds that build up in the engine oil from combustion blowby gasses. |

Location: 31 | I see 9 out of 10 boat mechanics surveyed recommended changing it before winter...... haha.
I'd guess the best reason to change in the fall is you are already there changing the lower unit oil anyway.
And... just in case you're considering waiting until spring on your lower unit? A few years back I went to change my lower unit lube in the fall and all that drained out was water... zero oil. I was totally flabbergasted at the thought of running for an unknown period of time with only water in my lower unit acting as a lubricant.
But then my thoughts changed to the cost to repair. I was surprised that my bill was only about $700 for the mechanic to go through the lower unit, replace a few seals, the pump, and a top end tune-up while it was there. Who knows how much more it would have cost had I waited till spring?
Another good reason; Boat mechanics are notoriously busy in the spring and if a problem is found, you got all winter.
