Just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on this. I will be fishig in spirit lake tomorrow and there is supposed to be thunderstorms with a chance of a of severe ones. Do fish bite well in the this kind of weather? The water temps are probably going to be in the low 50s. There is a high of 70 that day. Wind is supposed to be around 15 to 20 mph from the south. And please don't try and tell me to not go because my mind is made up lol. I've been having luck the past few weeks with a ten inch weagle and some super d's. what kind of lures would be good for this situation? Thanks!

Ok I won't tell you not to go, but I can say I'm not sure if they bite or not during a severe thunderstorm because I'd rather not die while fishing.

If I had to guess though, I would guess the fishing might not be great as the storm is upon you. Approaching storms/fronts are good of course. I would guess it could be similar to another front where fishing is good leading up to, but not as good during the front.

Just a guess. Be SAFE.

No fish is worth risking life and limb over.

To each their own. Let us know how you do. If you don't report back...well then...we might suspect the worst possibly happened...

If you know a major storm is on the way Saturday I would fish Friday if possible and definately pre-storm on Saturday! Heck fish Sunday too. I just wouldn't be out IN the storm. Plenty of days I've fished leading up to the storm, ran off the water when it got close and waited in the truck. Then get back out as soon as the weather clears and keep fishing. We've caught a few fish getting back out immediately after a storm has passed.

I love fishing stormy days...I will be on the water Saturday. If I start seeing lightning I will generally head back to the landing or beach the boat on a shore out of the wind and wait it out. I have caught way too many big fish on days like this not to fish.

It's hard to fish exactly right before the storm because the weather says its supposed to arrive around 3am lol and the lake I fish is a 45 min drive from where I live. The storm is also supposed to be all day and probably will be done around saturday night or early Sunday morning so there is no waiting it out haha. I might give it a go 2nite

The best day of fishing I ever had was when one storm after another chased us back to the landing to wait out the lightning. I won't tell you how many fish of all sizes from very small to huge the two of us put in the boat because you would think me a liar but the fish were everywhere and they were eating. Be off the water during the actual storm. Years ago lightning hit a tree at our cottage about 20 feet from my Dad we looked out to see him getting up off the lawn . He had the outline of his wire frame glasses etched into his face for about 2 years. If you must fish during a storm try to find a very tall partner and give him a very long graphite rod and when his hair stands on end Duck.

I used to fish through the storms, but came way too close too many times. Not worth getting dead over. I've had some of my best fishing, for all species, leading up to and immediately after a storm, but I have never once cought a fish in the middle of one. The same goes for heavy downpours. The possibility of storms wouldn't keep me off the water, but if there's lighting, we're gone. The way lightning works makes you a likely target. Standing in a metal boat, wet, holding an 8 foot graphite lightning rod. I'd rather run around the woods in a deer suit during gun season.

.....is stupid! Period. That's why I can't wait to use my new Lowrance unit complete with Serius Weather Radar. No more guessing where the storm is and where it's going. If you get stuck in a storm, do what I do....I carry four Survival blankets that are like tarps, and I'll get off the water and set up a makeshift tent in 5 minutes and get inside and wrap up in another one of the blankets. I bet you are a better target in the middle of the lake than 50 yards deep in the woods.

I normally get off the lake immediately when lightning is around...Decided to play with fire somewhat earlier this summer on LOTW and go "closer". Wasn't worried about much since my boat is pretty fast....

Learned two lessons...1) not all storms are created equally 2) you never know when you are going to have the dreaded console alarm go off and get yourself in a jam.

This is not me but was the same storm cell...if it looks fun in the picture I can assure you if was 10x less being on the lake with this thing above us...Don't be stupid, I know I won't make that mistake again

Here's one that we outran, and one that we didn't. I won't be doing that again soon. Lightning hit those trees in the second picture about 30 seconds after I took that shot. And hail hurts at 40 MPH!

About 20 years ago I worked with two guys who went down to Arkansas and went out on a lake bass fishing. They were on the lake when a storm hit. One of them woke up with the boat doing circles because the motor was still on. The other one never woke up. Not to scare you, but just to point out that it can actually happen.

Well one thing that you guys aren't aware of is that I do not go out on a boat. I go in waders to various spots. I do not go out on a boat because I cannot afford one. I am 17 and a senior in high school and I have college coming up so there is no way I could get a boat right now. Parents don't have one because they have never been big fishermen lol. I am at a disadvantage because I have no boat however I still am catching fish.

Hey, go musky fishing friday and sunday. "C'mon man" IMO, no fish is worth your life......i had a near death experience on the water chasing those musky's. My life flashed before my eyes and i almost drowned(and yes i could swim but try in super early spring when the water temps are in the 30's hyperthermia sets in lower half can't use, 5 layers of clothes and heavy winter boots). Nowadays, i tend to be a tad bit safer when musky fishing and when making those should i or shouldn't i hit the water with a storm. Play it safe dude and really think about it and wear a life vest!

I don't know about blankets and deep in the woods deal but the serious weather is well worth it.  It does take some "getting acquainted", but once you get used to it you are safer while concurrently being able to stay on the water longer and hopefully catch more fish... a very nice combination even if your 17. We were able to outrun/stay ahead of several storms and heavy downpours this past summer because of it... and have some extra peace of mind.

It's also kind of idiot proof because you get these warning beeps for upcoming storms and lightning strikes... sometimes when you don't see it coming. Highly recommend if available on your electronics.

The storm pictured in the post after the above quote is almost surreal looking... yikes!

Any time you can hear thunder get indoors or inside of a car/truck!

I won't go outside or leave my car or truck if I can hear thunder. Am I being paranoid? Not really, actually as an electrical engineer the topic of lightning physics, and lightning protection is part of my day to day work, and also a life long "hobby" (I'm 64). I can probably thank my grandma for my obsession with lightning- she liked to sit on the front porch on the farm, and watch the storms, probably because she was 100% Viking (Danish).

Take a look at this->
http://www.lightningsafety.noaa.gov/fatalities.htm

Notice the locations!

Enough said, its your life. Seventeen is awful young. But young folks aren't real good at risk assessment either. If you chose to gamble, you might lose.

Be safe!

Keep at it dude. I have caught fish off the Emerson docks as late as November. In fact, my biggest Iowa muskie came from there casting toward shore with a Burt a few years ago in early Nov. Stupid fish.

Fish Pike's too. Some really good cabbage on the north side with deep water close.

I'll be there bright and early tomorrow! Getting up probably at 4 and ill be there probably around 6ish. Will be there all day. Looks to be typical post cold front weather tomorrow. Strong northwest winds, bright and sunny, highs in the 60s. It really wasn't all that bad today, I probably could have went today but oh well. I got a secret spot that I KNOW Muskies will be at in the mornings and most of the time in the evening. Have had a minimum of 4 or 5 bites literally EVERY time I've been up there at sunset and sunrise. I seem to be the only Muskie fisherman who has figured that out around here though;)

alright got back from spirit lake. had a great day! it started off with 3 straight hits, 0 hookups, on my weagle at my secret spot, bright and early. as the day went on a few other guys showed up. i wish fishing probably 10 to 15 yards away from this other guy when he walks up to me and tells me to leave or he is going to quote "shove my pole up your ass." he claimed i was too close to him. he was probably in his 50s or 60s while i am 17 and still a minor, not sure if he knew that but he would have been in big trouble had he touched me. but i decided to be the bigger man and move way over from him. well imagine the look on his face when about 10 minutes later a giant muskie hits on my weagle while jumping 3 feet in the air. i get him in' measure him out. 43 inches, 30 pounds! my new personal best! the guy imediatly leaves the area. however one bad thing that happend was when i was holding the muskie for a picture he flips around and i end up with his jaws clenched around my thumb. i chose to still not let go of the mouth because i do not want the fish to fall to the ground and get hurt. so i set the fish down with its finger still in its mouth and rip out my thumb, the tooth is still in my thumb and comes out of its mouth. i get a deep puncture wound in my thumb. its just an absolute bloody mess everywhere. i take a few pictures, safely release the fish, and then drive myself to the ER. but it was ALL worth it!

here are a few pics of the fish along with the bangagin on my thumb and my bloody tackle box that came from my thumb

Nice photo's, nice fish. To bad your day had a bummer moment. You did the right thing, and it paid off! Hope the thumb heals quick so you're back tossing that weagle soon.

Nice catch but unfortunatly thats a silver pike not a muskie... one of the biggest I have seen caught in the area though... would put it at17 or so pounds judging from the pike we have caught in that size range from the area....

That's a musky... They look way different.
Here's the State record. The kid would have it from the look of it.

"Mark McKeever from Council Bluffs, Iowa caught this beautiful 30 " Silver Northern Pike this weekend fishing with John Grosvenor of JTG Expeditions in Okoboji, Iowa.
http://www.fishokoboji.com/
A silver northern is a rare genetic mutation of a Northern Pike. The Silver has very faint white spots or no spots at all on its body or fins. The world record Northern Pike was caught in Spirit Lake, Iowa and weighs only 13 pounds 6 oz.
Other differences in siver northerns include slightly larger eyes and a more straight jaw.

alright guys my friend tim who was with me at the time took a few high quality photos of the fish and he just emailed them to me. here they are.... i thought it was a musky also when i caught it. only thing is that i thought muskies have the pointy tip tail fin while pike have the rounder tip tail fin. idk you guys take a look and tell me what you think. but if it is a silver pike then ive got the record by a mile lol.

Having caught many silvers and muskies off that body of water and a few in veiw of that spot, it's a silver... I catch a dozen maybe 2 dozen silvers a year seen many many of them....

Couple muskies and a Silver from Spirit

Maybe its a hybrid. Half lunge and half silver pike? Is that possible?

kind of an interesting debate...what strain of fish do they use in that body of water for stocking? Looks like a Wisconsin strain of musky different from the others....

Iowa has been raising muskies since 1960, but the fish that got the program started did come from Wisconsin, forget the lake though..

The other thing about it too, is on the few pictures of proven silver pike on the page you can tell that the other fins and the tail are green in color as Pike should be and in Cpain's pictures they are red, which would indicate musky to me.

I like the hybrid Tiger thought!

But it is wierd that they are so rounded to, yet tail is pointy. IDK, great catch either way!

Ya idk it's weird. It's hard to imagine that all the Muskie experts on here can come to an agreement as to what kind of fish this is lol

Give the kid a break, it's a very nice PB, and probably felt like 30lb when he was holding it. Silver Pike - Muskie -Hybrid silver/muskie? From his last photo's, it looks muskie to me. It would be way cool if it was the later.

Cpain- Still a nice catch, I like the blood dripping from the thumb photo. Keep it up and seriously working on your fishing skills. Here's a tip: When you take the fish out of the water, take a really deep breath and hold it, when you have to take another breath so does the fish, get her back in the water.

Be proud, you did a good job! I wish I had the stamina of a 17yr old when fishing for muskies.

Have fun!

Thanks I appreciate it! Yeah the blood was pretty bad from my thumb but I was so excited it didn't hurt at all lol. And yes it did feel like 30 pounds because I am a fairly strong young man and I could barely lift it past my shoulders! When I do curls I use 25 pounders and the fish felt WAY heavier than those. But I'm inexperienced so who knows

And I've been doing some research and it looks like the world record silver pike was 41 inches and weighed about 18 pounds. Now my fish was 43 inches and it may not be 30 like I thought but I KNOW it was past 20 pounds. So if it is a silver pike then It would be a WORLD RECORD! Too bad I didn't keep it and get official weight and identification but oh well.... It was a great fish!

Na I'm glad it was released safe. I would never kill a fish on purpose. But a world record would have been nice! I should have at least counted the pores to find out for sure if its a silver pike or a Muskie.

Who's the bigger man here?

Cpain- Sweet, keep casting!

Send me a PM w/your address, I've got a lure for you to try. Confidence lures are good- just change it up, if your best bait isn't working try something new. I personally like Weagle's too!

Have fun!
