I am headed up to Vilas County for a week long trip next week. Puttin the boat in the water Saturday morning. Forecast calls for several nights with the temps in the low 20's. When docking the boat overnight, is it best to keep the outboard in the down position so the lower unit is in the warmer water or put the outboard in the up position so all the water drains out but the entire outboard is exposed to the freezing temps?

I would leave the lower unit down where the motor will drain when the motor is tilted it dosent completely drain. If you tilt your motor to load on a trailer you should lower and drain the motor before tilting back up.

What I wonder about is my water seperating filter that looks like the oil filter on my truck and no way of knowing if there is water in it that will freeze ( Mercury )

Keep it down in the water. It will not be cold enough for long enough to do any damage to anything this weekend.

keep it in the water, when you pull it out, lower it to drain it.

Nobody have thoughts on the water seperating filter.

If you are unsure...change it. Cheap insurance.

If you are unsure, unscrew it, empty the gas and water, and put it back on! That simple.
