You shouldn't cut the tag end with a side cutter, but rather twist the tag end off so that you don't have a flesh cutting burr.

Get a locking pliers and make a 90 degree bend Fig #1) in the tag end about a 1/2 in from the shaft, then lock that locking pliers onto the tag end wire as close to the shaft as you can and twist it on its axis (Fig #2) and it will break cleanly at the last place the wire is bent at the shaft.

I just use a round nose plier for the eye bend. Then I clamp the eye in a vice grip and turn barrel wraps on the shaft using my hand and turning the vice grips. Trim it like Muskie Nut.
Works for 0,51 wire, a bit hard on 0,62(You will need a longer tag end).
