Have a strange question, I have several rods which I very rarely use now and I just put a few for sale. Naturally the cost to replace them is pretty costly, My question is can you take a longer rod that has a Med or Med/Hvy rating and take off about a foot or so to make it a nice light (in weight) Jerk bait Rod? It just looks like the longer thinner tipped rods would look perfect for doing this.. Anybody try this on purpose or by accident? Mike

You can do it, but you don't need/want to take off a foot.  The stiffness will increase quickly with just a few inches.

I've done it a couple times and been very happy with the results.

I've done it unintentionally. I've got an 8' MH rod that is now about 7'8" due to an accident with a door. Lost the tip up to the first guide. Finally put a tip top on it and tried fishing with it. It actually makes a pretty good jerkbait rod.

Ive done it with a 6'8" jerk rof, that lost about 4" and it stil works perfect, also done it with a normal ful action spinning rod that i just thought was so sloppy/soft in the top 8", it works great as well.

Took 3 inches off a 9 footer. Like it much better. Doesn't hit the water all the time.

Go an inch or less at a time. Taking that much off a rod all at once is not a good idea...especially if you don't have experience in rod building. By going slowly and checking the stiffness of the rod, you'll be able to dial it in exactly where you want it.

Thanks Guys I will do one this weekend, I have a Nice inexpensive rod that I love using and prefer it to all my expensive rods. I have always wished it was a shorter, and always joked about cutting it. I have always believed that the Brand or Price of the rod you are using does not make you a better fisherman, you just look like you know what you are doing.... If you can work the baits the way they should be worked and the rod is a pleasure to fish with all day, It does not matter if it was a $50 rod or $350 rod as long as it works for you......How many times have you gone fishing with someone who has a cheap rod and reel setup that you would never even consider buying. The rod is all scratched up and the reel has a half filled spool with old line on it. You look at this and shake your head as he takes out a small Plano box with only 6 lures in it, verses your Box with a 150 lures.... Guess what, he catches the Biggest and only two Fish of the day. So there you are carefully putting your tournament series rods with the Calcutta Te's away after putting them in their protective rod saver sleeves. While you watch him just throw his rod on the boats floor You Know I'm Right..... Anyway I will try it an inch at a time until it feels good..(that sounds X Rated)....I think I just saved myself $$$$$$$$$$$$ Thanks Mike Sr.
