| So I got a new boat and it has two hds8's, down/side scan, with the 4000 puck. The previous owner says I need to charge the rear battery every couple days because the gps puck will draw on the system. My question is how can I avoid having to charge it every couple days. The hds8 units are powered by the master switch at the helm so I can cut power to them but not the puck. Any help would be great. |

| The puck is powered separately. Find the power wires and put them on the master power, or add a switch. |

| Thanks for the reply Shep. Bare with me as I am new to all this fancy stuff. It says the system is power by the NMEA 2000 network. I looked last night and could not find any power wires for the module just the feed into the t-block from the module. Am I missing them? My first thought was to hook it into my master block. |

| There must be power wires too besides the NMEA 2000 cables. The NMEA stuff just allows you to share it across the other units in the network but will not provide power to it. Its possible the power cable is coming off a separate T Connector somewhere.
Here is a good diagram I found: http://www.kokaneefishingforum.com/fishing-forums/showthread.php?22...
See on the far right bottom the nmea power cord? If the puck is connected to this NMEA network, its getting its power from the network, my suspicion is that the nmea network is not switched off with your master switch. Though your setup could be different than this one because there is always 10 ways to do the same thing. |

| Thanks Captain, I think I have a good handle on the situation now. I'm new to this high tech stuff but I'm starting to understand everything pretty good. Thanks for the link it will help for sure. |

| Yeah, I was mucking around trying to network my two HDS units. Had "most" of the ethernet backbone kit (forgot I scavenged it to get an older unit going with external puck) and couldnt get anything to work, not proper connections. So I went on the search.
In the end, for me right now I just bought the ethernet cable to connect the two units. Pretty slick, didnt have to do anything other than connect them and all my waypoints transferred over. IDK about my tracks though, perhaps they are there just not active. I need to dig into that further.
The one thing I learned is that NMEA is the way to go if you want to share GPS or Sonar. If you want waypoints, then ethernet. So, in the end I will be going the route of NMEA probably in the offseason if/when I get structurescan. I have been thinking about a LGC4000 too to I can mount that near the transom where my console transducer is, to make things more precise. Lots of options, lots of money. |
