| Last week I got into some shallow water and sucked some sand into the intake. It plugged up the water discharge, so I hooked it up to the garden hose and flushed everything out. Now the water is flowing just fine again but the water pressure gauge doesn't work.
My engine in a 2008 150 hp Opti. I'm assuming there is something else I need to clean to get the gauge working again. Can anyone give me a little help? |

Location: Hayward, WI | Do you have a analog water pressure gauge or digital? If analog just unhook the hose from the back of the gauge and blow back through it. If digital there is a sensor on the back of the motor, remove the hose from that and blow back through it.
You cold also have a stuck poppet valve or thermostat and actually don't have any water pressure... |

| Had a similar problem with a speedo except that it was some woody debris sucked in. I used an air compressor with a blower attachment (ie "blow gun" ), and used the regulator to bump the pressure down to about 20 PSI so as not to blow the line up. You may have a connection back by the motor that you can unhook without digging under the dash.
Obviously you need to be extremely careful at this point to make sure the impeller is pumping sufficient water and didn't get trashed by running sand through it. |

| I have an analog gauge. I don't have an air compressor so is this something tricky I should have my repair shop handle or is there another way to get it cleaned out?
My high temp alarm went off alerting me to the problem originally. After I cleaned out the discharge with the garden hose and also by using a small piece of wire to loosen up the sand at the discharge port, I had no additional issues with the temp alarm and the engine showed no signs of any overheating. I ran the engine for about 4 days after the incident as I was on vacation at the time and it ran just fine. Just couldn't get a water pressure reading.
I had the impeller replaced last winter during my annual engine service. After cleaning the port, I am getting a good strong stream of water, so I think my only issue is with the water pressure gauge. I also re-cleaned everything when I got home and got a little more sand to wash out at the garden hose connection plug.
