Genetic Defects

Was fishing a lake this summer and my buddy boated a 46 incher that had a huge HUMP BACK. We thought the deformity was from a past injury. Then, a few hours later I caught this fish that was just a little smaller on the exact same spot.... and it had the SAME defect. The fish looked like its back was snapped and when it swam in the water looked like an upside down "V". Could this be a genetic defect???

Anyone else have photos of fish with deformities?

OH MY GOD! You did not tell me you wore white socks with your sandals. Oh please! Yes, I thought the granola chicks were cute in college too, and I even own a pair of Birkenstocks myself. But PLEASE, if it’s warm enough to wear sandals DO NOT WEAR SOCKS! - especially white ones. I see your boyfriend has a matching pair too. Was your guide also in on this fashion faux pas?

Ps. Was that fish on a TripleD too?

JLong
I caught 3 different fish with similar back structure in Smoky Lake east of Phelps. In each case the fish seemed to be quite healthy but a bit deformed. I always felt that this was some sort of genetic trait. I saw these fish over a period of 6 years; they could not have been the same fish because I saw the biggest about 43 inches first followed by the middle size fish about 39 inches and finally the smallest at about 32 inches. Odd fish but fun to catch.

Could be worst Nxtwrldrcd, he could be wearing a "clubbing shirt" at a musky tournament function like I did. he,he,he.
My buddy caught a Tiger this past summer that had a huge lump near the mid section of the fish also. Looked just like you described Jason. The back appeared as if it was broken, but the fish was fine. Speaking of which, that fish was caught during the same tournament that I wore my "Clubbing Shirt". Maybe there's a connection between our attire and the fish darn near breaking their backs trying to get away.

catch ya later,
Krappie

NRW, I think he is getting used to the idea for later in life, when he will be wearing shorts with black socks and sandalls.[]

Talk about deformities, do you have some pajama pants you wear out there too, Jason?
Is life really like a box of chocolates?
LOL[]

JL, thanks a bunch! I've a picture with a 40+ fish where I'm wearing the same as you, jeans, white socks, and sandals. Didn't think much about it at the time, gym shoes were soaked and the sandals were handy. Didn't think the fashion police extended their reach to this board, oh well! LoL
How about we re-create the SNL "We're two wild and crazy guys" we just need the hats?
I'm sure I'll never post "that" pic here[] [:sun:] [:praise:]

Gerry lives,
And besides, everyone knows, due to Coast Guard safety regulations, socks must be worn to keep ankle bracelets from snagging on foriegn objects.

Hiya,
Could have been a birth defect, genetic or otherwise, or the result of an injury early in development.

When I guided pike in Alaska, one of the areas we fished for a bit was around the Iditarod River. In parts of the Iditarod mercury naturally leeches into the system. In those areas a large number of the fish you caught were deformed in some manner - bent backs, goofy snouts, missing (or extra) fins, wierd coloration. It was a real freak show. All of the fish we caught were as fat, dumb and happy as could be, and it seemed strange to me that these fish could forage successfully as messed up as they were until it dawned on me that the stuff they were feeding on was probably just as deformed as they were.

Tell you what though - made me take the mercury consumption advisories a little more seriously...

Jlong,

It looks like ROAD RASH!

Maybe someone caught it and dragged it on shore for a while, then released it.[;)]
