Shimano Cardiff 400 Question

Subject: Shimano Cardiff 400 Question

Hey All,
I've been using musky baitcasters for about 25 years. I just got a brand new Cardiff 400 (mounted on a TI 8') and used it in northern WI for 5 days of fishing. The reel was acting up constantly. In a nutshell, the cast control knob wouldn't tighten up enough to keep even my lightest musky tackle from dropping quickly into the water when I adjusted to a new bait. I'm talking about 3oz single blade bucktails. The backlashes were terrible. It seemed to cast the heavier dawgs and such better than the lighter stuff, which was very strange. I never opened it up to look at the brakes, but the cast knob issue kept me from even opening it up. I had the cast knob hand-tightened as hard as I could, and it still blew up on me over and over. So, any ideas to what the issue may be? Did I possibly receive a defective reel? Thanks in advance for your replies.

You got a bad one! I have 5 or 6 Cardiffs with no issues what so ever!1 I love em'! Don't hesitate to send it back and try another one! You won't be disappointed! Mine are also paired up with TI rods. I feel they're a great set-up at a price that won't break the bank!

Check the brakes. You can't complain about the performance of the reel if you don't know if it's set up right. Isn't it possible that none of the brakes are engaged if you haven't opened it up? I've had no problems with my Cardiff.

Set the brakes, open up the cap, and make sure the cast control is not bone dry. A drop of oil may help. Pike Master? Reelman?

First make sure the spool brakes, there is 6 of them, make sure 3-4 are on.
As far as the cast control not able to hold a 3oz bait from falling ???? I would send the reel back to Shimano if it is only 1 week old and they should replace it or repair it for FREE.

I think you can complain when a reel doesn't work right out of the box! I sure as heck wouldn't want to tear into a brand new reel! "Just Sayin"

Agreed. I didn't want to open it up to adjust the brakes when the control knob seems the be the issue.

I personally wanted to know how many brakes were engaged before I used any of my reels.
