Mike Vogelsang - WDNR Area Fisheries Supervisor out of Woodruff, WI. will be giving a special presentation on the current WDNR initiative for raising size limits to 50" for Muskellunge on selected lakes in the N. Central area of WI.

The meeting is sponsored by the First WI Chapter of Muskies Inc and will be held 7 p.m. December 2, 2002 at Arizona's - 1009 W. Park Ave Chippewa Falls, WI.

As many of you know, raising limits in WI has not been warmly received in all areas of the state yet the benefit of more progressive limits has been demonstrated in the blossoming trophy fisheries of neighboring states like Minnesota.

This meeting is an excellent opportunity to get informed, ask questions and find out where the future lies for Muskies in WI!

This meeting is free and open to everyone. There will be a raffle of fishing equipment as well.

If you would like anymore information, please contact me - Jon Olstadt - at the contacts listed below.

Jono- Terrific! The first real positive thing I've heard all year! Great news!! I'm in favor of even higher limits , but that may not be well received either. I think the next serious step is negotiation w/ Native Americans to stop the winter /spring spearing of Muskies and gill netting. The Native Americans are now realizing the power of their posistion to improve their and their children's quality of life. I think a negotiated stop to these practices is in everyone's best interest, including Native Americans. I just hope they realize it!

Excellent news, and good work to those who put this together!!! After writing the resolution last year and getting flak from certain org I was a little discouraged. But after the spring vote and we passed it overwhelmingly, I was exstatic to say the least. there are still a few who are asking for "scientific" proof that certain waters "need" higher limits, etc, etc...but the majority of musky anglers are agreeing that certain waters have what it takes for this to work, and it is really looking up. There are only a handful of special regulation high size limit lakes, and 900 plus others with the 34" limit. for those who disagree, there are plenty waters where they will still have the same regulations as in the past. I will be glad to fish the other lakes, where my odds of catching numbers of trophies will(proven over and over) will undoubtedly increase within a season or two.

Thanks!!

I can't make this meeting but I will be calling him about this. I hope that as fishermen that really want to do the best to create better trophy lakes that all is taken into consideration. We all know that there are only a handful of lakes that this could work on. I think the question that has to be asked is this. Can we get get too many muskies in a lake if this is passed . Will we get longer muskies but skiny muskies due to the pressure this will put on the food source. This is where I think a slot limit would benifit as some smaller muskies may be harvested keeping a healthier balance in the lake to grow long and fat muskies. I know in Illinois they were just given a grant to study bigger size limits and if it will work and the impact it will have on a body of water.I think there are alot of questions that have to be answered befor any angler would vote on this.

Too bad you won't be there Don because I'd like to listen to you challenge a guy like Mike with your take on trophy fishery solutions and slot/size limits.

From what I understand so far about Mike's initiative is that limits are to be set on lakes that have the history/potential to produce big fish. I guess that how many lakes in this state have big fish potential thus justifying a bigger limit is a matter of opinion for most of us. I am not sure how they determined what makes a candidate for the list.

I support limits that work. If it can be demonstrated that a body of water has the characteristics necessary to hold big fish and the fish genetics say it is possible (cleithrum studies) to get big then why shouldn't there be a higher limit?

C'mon down tonight folks and check it out. This is an opportunity to get information, with science behind it, direct from the source. This is an opportunity to hear first hand where we may be heading for Muskie Management in WI.
