| The WORLD MUSKIE TOURNAMENT SERIES™ (WMT Series™) made its first stop on the Eagle River Chain of Lakes for the 2012 tournament season with the PROFESSIONAL MUSKIE ANGLER CIRCUIT™ (Pro-MAC™) Muskie Masters Open Championship™ qualifying event, the fourth of six major open championships on the circuit. The WMT Series™ will revisit the waters of Eagle River on October 6 th and 7th with the season ending Invitational Championship™ that will set the record for the all time highest pay-out for a muskie tournament circuit when the “dust" of competition settles on that historic Sunday afternoon. But first the Eagle River Muskie Masters Open Championship™ on August 25th and 26th had to be challenged by the tournament competitors who were hungry to battle with the resident toothy muskies not only to win the event, but to put fish “on the board" for the very important qualifying points to make it to the Championship. Fortunately, the muskies were equally as hungry, cooperating forty five (45) times for the day and a half of fishing with twenty six (26) muskies on Saturday and nineteen (19) on Sunday.
The first muskie to be registered on Saturday would come from the team of Jared Adamovich and Jeremy Barber at 6:12am with a 35.25 incher but the local anglers from Eagle River weren't done there, they would continue to score on a 39“shortly after at 7:04am finishing the duo's day of competition but landing the team in fourth place at the end of the first day of competition. The next team to double up for the competition would be Scott Lewandowski and Dan Dassow with fish of 39.50 inches at 7:31am and 37 inches at 8:39am putting the two on top of the leader board by the end of day one of competition. Scoring on the biggest fish of the day would be Rick McClellan and Ryan Wahlgren that measured 43.50 inches at 12:01pm. At 1:15pm, John Cestkowski and David Godin would tie the leaders with a 35.50" muskie, adding to their previous day's catch of 41 inches at 6:20am but by virtue of the tie breaker rule of time, they would own the second place standings at the conclusion of Saturday's fishing. The fourth and final team to double up for the day would come from Randy Kauranen and Phil Markgraf with muskies of 39.50 inches at 7:18am and a 35.25 incher at 2:14pm.
Between the two days of competition, it would have appeared that Sunday's cloudy skies would trump the sunny skies of Saturday in production but appearances aren't always as they seem as Sunday's fishing started out much slower than the previous day's totals, only to have the action finally pick up after 8:15am. However, Sunday's slow start didn't make a difference to the angling team of Randy Miller and Joe Brezinski when they would battle a beast of a fish that measured 49.50 inches at 6:25am, giving the duo a shot at winning the 2012 Hunter Trophy™ for the largest muskie of the season and a chance to win a free Fittante Taxidermy graphite reproduction of their trophy fish. Several teams who landed muskies on Saturday would also register additional fish on Sunday including the winners Adamovich and Barber with two muskies of 39 inches at 8:54am and a 35 incher at 10:10am to be the only team to quadruple. Also catching two muskies on Sunday were Ryan Bock and Tim Rutzen with a 35.75" at 6:24am, a 42 incher at 11:36am and when added to their previous days catch of a 35.50 inches at 1:13am gave the team a second place finish. Landing the last fish of the contest and a third place finish was Tony Piantek and Bill Vierkandt with a 39" muskie at 11:51am adding to their first day's tally of 39.75 inches at 7:50am.
