I am looking for a new reel for my Dad who will be 75. He currently throws with a St Croix Avid and likes that but I am looking for a reel that is faster. He throws 8's a lot and 10's some too. I am looking for a reel that won't require much more effort, is similar in size to the St Croix and has a level wind and self engaging clutch. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

If He isn't burning the 8's and 10's I'd say the Curado 300 EJ - I have one and it is my just about everything reel, very smooth and very light.

Do him a favor and Do Not get him a High Speed Revo Toro.as suggested by GUEST............Not great for Burning 10's at all ..He'll cast a half dozen times and take the 10's off......

+1 about do not get a Toro HS for 10's. You may try filling the spool with line all the way to the shoulder on the reel he has now. If the line is not spooled to the shoulder, the retrieve rate (inches per turn of the crank) is decreased. This can make a surprising difference.

Try a Shimano Calcutta 300D, 30inches of line pickup, will work on DCG8 and 10 should be OK.

I am leaning towards the Calcutta 300D. Is it a reel that can be palmed pretty easily? Thanks for all the suggestions.

My Dad is also 74. I let him use my Tranx PG. He's not burning it, but he pulled 8's and 10's for 5 days without an issue. Easy to crank, no levers to flip. Lets him engage as soon as it hit the water. I spooled it with 80Lb TUF.

I think its great that they are still after it! My dad got a nice 48" on the trip and was thrilled!

+1 for the Curado EJ. It's fairly fast 31"/crank, easy to palm, and much more powerful the the regular 300. I like mine even better the my TE's for straight reeling baits. You can run 10's fairly fast, not Trinidad speed but 8's and 9's are pretty easy. All of this and Shimano's quality = a great reel.
