A man drove his boat with a young girl skiing between my boat and the shoreline (while casting)! ...Next time, I'll aim! Anyone else getting constant drive-bys like this!?!

Other than that, I've thrown blades, rubber, and top-waters (in the weeds, on the rocks, and weed/rocks). I've gone deep and shallow. I've reeled slower, slow, fast, and faster. I've been out during moon phases and non-moon phase hours. Mornings and nights. Clouds and wind, as well as hot sunshine. No musky since last Saturday. It's Wednesday.

first off, that is a great username

and yeah, i had some fool with his wife and son drive his boat between myself and a weedbed this past weekend. saw him coming so i threw 1 right in front of his boat, but he kept going. then when he was right between me and the weedbed i threw 1 over his head, still didnt phase him or he was probably just trying to pretend like he didnt know what was going on. what an idiot.... but his son did a very non-subtle duck so i got some amusement out of that

we had the same thing happen a few years back in a tourny. and on top of it there were people swimming off the end of there pier between us and shore. the guy skiing was about 10 yards from them. quick phone call to the sheirff and they were out there later that day. dont know if they issued any tickets though, at the time we talked to him he didnt yet.

I took off the hooks on an old chicken to snap on when they get close... they get the idea when you hit the side of their boat...

Fatchick,
Watch your language, please.

As to an answer, the muskies could care less; boats go over them all the time.

Most states have a law on the books how close another boat on plane may go by you. If they are breaking that law, take the boat number down and turn them in or call the boat number in to the DNR/Water patrol if it's during the day.

You can be charged with a crime if you hit anyone with a lure, and that's serious. Injure someone and get ready for jail time.
Even if you try and miss but strike the boat...or even come close, you are breaking the law. Because one party is misbehaving, doesn't give license to another to threaten or cause bodily harm.

I was on white bear a few yrs back and it was about 30 mins after dark and i hear some splashing out towards the middle of the lake then hear "help"... 2 girls swimming out in the dark... there was 3 boats in about a 5 min span fly right past the area they where in and i know they didnt see them.. good reminder to really watch it at night as you never know if some goof decides to go for a swim or someone's boat got away, floating logs etc. I went out and got the 2 girls and brought them back to their dock. They are lucky they didnt get hit by boats driving fast at night.

Was fishing a drop off last summer on a Tuesday afternoon. Maybe 4 boats on the whole lake. A couple with about 6 kids pull up within 10' of us and start swimming. I looked at him and asked "are you kidding me". I wanted to cast a lure close to them but it wasn't the kids fault. I just moved on, but it still makes me mad when I think about it.

This seems to happen to me out on bald eagle in metro MSP quite regularly, I usually cast behind the skier and I'm the one that usually ends up with the dirty look...

I used to get so mad at those nice guys I literally wanted to shoot holes in their boats. But at the end of the day, they'd still be oblivious idiots and I'd be sitting in jail. Thought it better to just get the numbers off their boat, wait until they aren't around, and THEN shoot holes in their boat.

Truthfully, half of them probably don't even know what they are doing.

Where I usually fish, you do NOT want to bother the sheriff by calling him for something like that. You'd be interrupting his musky fishing, and that would be very unwise.

Another good review from a sheriff here. I was checked a while ago and I asked him what my chances were of getting in trouble if I get a hit someone with a bait. He said honestly they'll probably get a ticket.

Steve,
I promise I don't have any violent tendencies! I'm think I'm just describing the thoughts of many fishermen in this skiing situation. You find a spot that you think will raise a musky, you want it in the boat, and BAM! You get this drive by as if you're not there. Point made.

Last 2 times someone has gotten too close with skier, I've taken a picture of them making sure I'm real obvious about it so they see me take it and then pretend to call someone. On both occassions, they must have thought I called the sheriff, because they let off the throttle to the skiers displeasure and were told to get in the boat because they were leaving which they did. Too bad the fish aren't that easily fooled.

Don't cast at the ppl in the boat, but I would maybe cast in the wake directly behind their boat. Have had some success doing this, even on topwater. It might be rare but sometimes I think it might make a fish more agressive.

I think the metro guys get more worked up over boat traffic. Whenever I have the privelage of fishing a metro lake I consider the boat traffic novelty and expect cut offs. I personally think that fish in a heavy traffic environment get a used to feeding with traffic.

My favorite night on Minnetonka was Thursday night sailing night. Do they still have that? What a hoot. Dodging pontoons, jet skis, and then sailboats on top of it all. One of my most memorable evenings fishing ever. Moved a lot of fish that evening in the midst of the chaos. I felt like I was bobbing up and down in an ocean while casting.

The point is I do not mind pleasure boats and skiers buzzing me. They are ignorant and I don't think the fish care. I do get ticked when other musky fishermen cut me off and think my boat is some kind of structure to be casted around. They should know better.

My new pet peeve is those big wake boarding boats that buzz by you creating a huge wake that nearly knocks you in the water, and ontop of that they usually blare some crappy music for the whole lake to hear.

Once on Owasso, MN we were fishing the center bar when I noticed a boat coming on plane straight at me. Not unusual...they usually see me and veer away eventually. This one was at 150 yards, then 100 yards, then 50 yards and still no change in track. I had made a long cast assuming this would eventually be no issue, then looked over and realized that I was quickly going to be in serious danger. With only seconds to impact, I dropped my rod and starting shouting and waiving both hands above my head, trying to get the drivers attention...and to allow me to jump out of the boat at the last moment to avoid a direct impact. Just as I was about to be hit, the driver of the on-coming boat saw me and jerked his boat hard to the left...running the length of my boat at full throttle probably less than a foot from my gunwale. His prop picked-up my line and quickly spooled me, breaking off my lure. The driver never stopped. I didn't care about any of that, so happy was I to be alive. I trembled for a while after that harrowing experience. Yeah, metro fishing... Brian

Outside of Brian's experience (yikes!), I don't mind at all when they run in front of where I'm fishing. I used to get upset when I was younger, but now, after dropping a bunch of casts behind the boat or skier and catching fish, That's where my cast goes now (behind them), with the expectation of a fish getting kicked up by the boat and up and out of the weeds (if I'm fishing weeds), or with the thought that my bait looks like a disoriented baitfish, which will promptly get creamed. I've gotten some nice fish casting behind boats, so as long as they aren't on top of me, I'm fine with it.

Get too close to me though, wonder if a .40 cal round in the engine would get their attention (joking of course, don't get yer undies in a bundle).

This year has been the "year of the pleasure boater". The are almighty and glorious this yr - they rule the lakes and thats no lie... they really come out w/ all the warm bluebirdy weather we are having. They are making up for a few yrs ago when it was often cloudy, windy, and cool... they are on top of the world this yr and puffing out there chests when they drive by cause they know they are the $%*& this yr.

I was out fishing panfish one summer with a buddy before I got addicted to the skis. I had a jet ski rip by maybe 20 feet away so I waved my arm trying to tell him to move away a bit. He rips over to the PA and I see him telling someone at the access and pointing our way. His buddy jumps on and is heading straight at us at full speed. At the last minute I reached in my livewell and pulled out a crappie. I chucked it at him and barely missed. He cruised by again a little farther this time and flicked me off and my buddy and I were laughing uncontrollably which made him even more mad. Lucky for me I got checked by the sherrif about an hour later and got to share my story with him and point out the jet ski. He said thank you and headed over to have a little chat with them. No idea if they ever got a ticket though.

As most of you have said, I'm not concerned that they may scare fish, but the fact that I have to stop and hang on until things settle down that pee me off.

I've come to peace with the fact that some mysterious force exists in this world that pushes pleasure boaters towards the 75 ft between me and the shoreline and not the mile of open water behind me. The 30 ft yacht plowing up a 4 ft wake w/ the sailor cap wearing, millionaire turd behind the wheel still raises my blood pressure a bit.

the other week i was out catfishing and had a bunch of kids in their 20s driving a boat with a kid wakeboarding behind it. Cut the boat about 10 feet away from us to sling the wakeboarder towards us. should've punched him for being a jerk he got so close going by instead he wrapped a line around his board spooled my calcutta and ruined the gears and drag before i could do anything about it. i'm 21 years old and even im not that stupid or ignorant to do that.

wow, thats getting out of hand - spooled by a wake boarder while catfishing. i have never heard of that before.... nice job keeping your cool - i wouldnt know what to do in that situation, but definetly unacceptable on there part. someday that wake boarder will spool the wrong catfisher and probably pay the price. i know some pretty tough biker style catfisher that probably would have tied that wake boarder into a pretzel if he spooled them like that.

Since this post is kind of telling funny stories.. if anyone knows of Arcola Bridge on lake Mntka - earlier this year i was motoring through that area heading in around 1 am on a weekday and i hear a bunch of rumbling underneath the bridge and a guy yells "hey I am trying to get some sleep, get out of here"- scared the b jesus out of me... it appeared the guy was living under there. I always see a scruffy guy panfishing from shore down there I wonder if its him. I also had a beer bottle thrown at me another time through there, but couldnt tell which direction it came from and i didnt see anyone but got the heck out of there.

Happens to me all the time on the chain I yell and they wave. One of my buddys casted at a boat on CL a.few.years back. He ended up hitting the boat they let him sit in a cell for a few hours telling him he was going to be charged with assault with a deadly weapon. The people did not press charges so he was released. Most of the people have no clue they are doing anything wrong.

It's part of the game.... I had 2 Walleye guys last week just at dusk drive their boat exactly along the weedline I was fishing and drove right pass me nearly clipping my Whopper Plopper with their keel. I was amazed considering it was 2 anglers and they had plenty of enough time and room to ride within the actual massive channel behind me. They choose to drive outside of navigational markers with 30 feet of my boat right along weedline where I was casting. Pretty stunned....

Easy on the water-skiers. Not all of them are stupid, just most. It's something to do when the water temp is in the mid-80s and it beats getting drug around in a tube. I'll be in the MasterCraft next week. I don't get close to fishermen, but I get close enough for them to wonder why they're killing themselves in the 100 degree heat while I'm having fun.
