Unorthodox topwater baits

Anybody use non-topwater baits for topwater fishing? here are some of mine:

Jointed believer

Super shad rap, sublte tail moving the water action

Wiley's deep musky king, big wake can pop it off the surface, makes noise, good changeup topwater.

Sledge, put a 1/2oz+ bell sinker on the tail and you have a water thrashing, rattling jackpot.

any others?

I agree with ya on the Jointed Believer and any jointed crankbait that has good wobble.

Hi All,
Try a magnum Rappala, I just file the lip back a bit. They can be worked slowly or ripped and they work subsurface or on top. It's been an excellent early season bait for me.[]

I use a Suick on the top, especially in thick weeds where i can pop it through, and in the deep channels of the Wisconsin river. Pop it under just far enough to get a good tail wiggle, then let it nearly surface, repeat.

Squirrels work pretty good, too, but seem to zig when they oughta zag.[:p] I put 'em in little kevlar suits, and quick strike rig them, alota work.[;)]

my best one has been a tail from a black golden retriever with a globe style head in front of it and rigged with a quickstrike 3-treble hook rig [8)] [] [:praise:] Marv's hairy bug, eat your heart out! LOL!![] [] [] [] [] [] []

todd m, i'm on the same page as you. The Wiley's wide body King's or whatever they are called are very boyant and with that lip, wide body and high boyancy, they are sweet to plop, chug on the surface.
the only other really non-conventional topwater i use are suckers...yea, you heard me say it before, but i work em' like jackpots or tighted (shorten the quickstrike? and the go around like topraider...when that suckers doesn't look too go anymore, pick her up and cast cast cast...

Years ago I bought a rapala top prop. Big ugly thing that I only threw once to see the action. Has anybody caught anything on this lure?

ok, seriously, I use the 7" suick with the tail bent upwards so it doesn't dive at all. I fish it with long sweeps and short twitches (makes it zig zag op top). Had a few decent pike grab it, only landed two though. One was about a 38" fish.

In the spring I will twitch a 5 or 6 inch Slammer (Golden Shiner out on Pewaukee)and let it hit the surface thru-out the retrieve.

Some days it works great!

With small slammer shallow cranks you can let them rise to the surface and give them a swift pop which will make a nice surface disturbance. If you work a magic maker just right you can get it to periodically bust the surface slightly.

If a cobbs crazy shad is worked right it will be on the surface with the tail spashing on every move. I also use a crane right on top, as well as a shallow invader very slowly twitching it and cranking it slow. Of course a believer is good too.

My favorite unorthodox is the 9" Bobbie popped on the surface(love that bubble trail). Next would be the 10" jake ultra slow cranked after dark, followed by a Hi-Finn Giant Scamper.

Bulging spinnerbaits over the top of thick weed beds would be my favorite especially on the Goon.

I use a 7" Red Fin and pop it on the surface REAL SLOW when a fish is spotted . They can't stand it when it sits there and and just twitches over their heads. I fish it like a Rapala for smallmouth. Works for me, even had a small one hit it while it was sitting still for about 20 seconds , just like a bass will at times.

I also use jointer belivers, sledges and few others named above but my favorite has to be a blitzen shad. It can be fished in a zig zap pattern on just realed in an S pattern on top just as well as under the water. It is the only lure I know of that can be swimmed in an S pattern at lower speeds and it's deadly and so exiting to see a monster come up to and inhale it.
