Location: Lake Country, Wisconsin | Do you use the specific oil that your engine maker suggests? Yamaha 2M on a VMax, Merc oil for Merc Engines, etc...?
Run a Vmax and the price has increased significantly in the last year or so on Yamaha oil and I hate to be throwing money away for something that may really not be that important..? |

Location: minocqua, wi. | i'm using the merc oil for the pro-xs which is quite a bit more expensive than the stuff for the opti ...
on so many other things (old race sleds, augers etc...) i used klotz and amsoil with confidence. i'm sure it's something you should be able to consider with confidence. i'm in a 5-year warranty now so will continue paying my mercury union pension-fund priced oil, but i smell what you're steppin' in Brian!! |

| imo you don't have to run a certain brand for your engine..ie you could run merc oil in your yamaha just fine brian...buy a good brand but you don't need the carton to say yamama...2 strokes are 2 strokes
i have run every brand oil in my yamaha sleds no issues... |

Location: Lake Country, Wisconsin | yeah what does she run you a jug?
Yamaha stuff went up from 25 to 33$ bucks, I'm certainly not a cheap skate by any means but I see the " other stuff " with the same rating that looks and smells the same which I have used in the past with no issues and one starts to wonder whether they are throwing away money for nothing...
I was thinking about in comparison of the gas we put in our boats, surely that stuff we get in Canada can't be all that great so what's the difference? |

Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | I have been running AMSOIL HP Injector oil in my 1999 Merc 225 OPT for over 9 years now. I have never had that motor in the shop. I run AMSOIL in both my boat motors, engine and gear oil. I also run it in my truck, car, wheeler, chain saws, weed eater, etc. Great oil for everything. It helps I got a sweet connection...LOL |

2 stokes are 2 strokes but you cannot just use any 2 stroke oil in a 2 stroke DFI engine (like an Optimax) for instance. You want to ensure that the oil you run is specifically made for the engine you have. Make sure if you have an Optimax you run a DFI oil (like Amsoil HP injector).
I have a 2011 Merc Opti 225 ProXS and run the amoils HP injector for $29 a gal (or 4Litres) but the Merc Opti oil is about $60 a gal.

i haven't read the warranty on the pro-xs yet, but can you void your warranty if you don't use the mercury-approved oil product in it?? |

I know there have been issues about this. I'm no law expert, but have been told if you use an oil that meets or exceeds manufacturer specs then you are fine. I don't believe they can MAKE you use their oil (without giving it to you), or deny a warranty claim because of that. But again, I'm not a lawyer. |

Location: one foot over the line | I was told by an inside source that the Quicksilver DFI oil that i run in my 175 Opti is the same as Merc oil. Also, on the back of the jug it states: "Quicksilver Performance DFI Oil provides warranty protection fo all Mercury and Mariner OptiMax and DFI engines. |

Location: Uxbridge Ontario | From what I understand, warranty cannot be denied if the the proper grade is used. In the Opti case, it is a full synthetic DFI oil.
Amsoil has a great track record and is an excellent product. I have used their products for close to 10 years now... Mainly for 2 stroke snowmobiles, but I think they really are the ultimate test anyways (high HP, high rpms, high mileage and high hours in wet and cold environement). |
