| I really have not given night fishing alot of time.
Question is for you guys that wear head lamps, do you leave it on and keep an eye on your bait when it comes in or does the light scare the followers away?
I have also heard of people using glow beads on the top of their leader to be able to see that coming in.
What's the concensus out there?

Location: Oconto Falls, WI | Light off or the bugs will drive you crazy. You will get a feel for where the bait is at. That said I don't fish bucktails at night. It is much easier to tell where my crank, Big Joe, or Hardhead is at night so I don't use beads either. |

Location: La Crosse, WI | I've used the glow beads, they work great. It really allows you to do a much more precise figure 8 when you know exactly where your bait is. The headlamp thing is a no go, bugs will be bad and most likely would scare away a follow. |

Location: Duluth, MN | I recommend the Glowin Outdoors stirps. Put a small half inch strip on a cowgirl blade. You can see it from several feet away and get a perfect figure 8. And they last alot longer than any bead i've ever tried. They dont need to be recharged every 5 minutes.
My sons PB 48.5 was caught on a Black and Nickel DCG with a stirp on the blade at 10:30 at night. Looks cool spinning under water. |

Good point. I do use the glowin' outdoors tape on my trolling motor head to see where it is pointing at night, as well as some little rectangles of tape on my foot pedal to know where the right, left, and "go" buttons are at. |

I hate night fishing though. I have some perception troubles I guess plus I have a dizziness issue that makes it less than fun when you get a bit "off" balance.
Last time I did fish past 10 pm though I had my son along on the big V and was near some deep rocks that transitioned shallow. Nothing...nada...all day save for a couple "shows". Was reeling in and picked up and a large fish just blasted out of the water approx 2ft out from the boat and scared the livin' cr_p out'a me.
Dang near bounced off the side of the boat. I've since learned about the fig. 8's...the hard way.
Still hate night fishing...

Location: minocqua, wi. | night-time is the right-time ... fish enough nights and you'll feel your bait on your retrieves.
having a good head-lamp is important for the unhooking event. using your electronics to fish makes it even easier and more productive. night-fishing this week as an example has been very productive and also more comfortable. launch around 7pm. til midnight or so and then sleep in a little later and an afternoon nap in the cool house.
give it time and you'll have a blast with it! big moon and clear skies and you've almost got all the light you will need ... |

Location: Oshkosh | Tip for fishing at night, and when to go into the 8, take a piece of 20# mono and tie a slip bobber knot about 4 feet up or a little over two reel cranks up. Add a dab of super glue to hold it in place and you will know when to go into the 8. Works quite well!

Location: Right behind you (tap, tap) BOOO | Learned from a buddy how to tie on my leaders where I have tag about 18" from the leader and once I feel that go through the top guide I know it's time to go into the figure 8, been using this method for a couple years and works the best for me. I tend to night fish alot. Headlamps are reserved for function only (unhooking, changinbaits, etc...) due to the crazy bugs.... |
