Just picked up a couple. Should a guy put on bigger hooks? The ones on their are a little small. Also, anybody ever change the blade size or the type of blade?

thanks Brian

4/0 VMC 9650 hooks are fine ,remember you are coming in contact with the bottom don't want to large of a hook on there. I like Musky Innovations 4/0 on the top. Straighten one of the hooks stick it in the plastic so it comes loose after the hook set. Seems to help. As for the rear blade its a #6 go larger and the bait falls slower. I like an #8 for casting and hopping back to the boat. The best way to learn to use them is to leave everything else at the house .

The 4/0 hooks that come with the bait are fine & don't need to be changed. Putting a different size blade on it will change the angle the bait drops at so leave that alone as well.

the blades that he uses on them are #5 colorado, as mentioned above the bigger the blade on the back it does sink quite as fast and works well for casting it

Yes,
#5 or 6 ( some manufacturer calls #6 a #5 ) if you use for jigging and one size larger for casting.
So, Jon Bondy said...

Thanks for the purchase! I don't change anything, except putting the extra hook on top if it's slow. The new magnum coming out has 5/0 of the VMC's and a bigger blade and weight....looks pretty darn good.

thanks for all the replys and advice. I do plan on doing both jigging and casting with them. Jon, do you or some one else have a picture of what you did with the extra hook on top?

thanks

It isn't anything fancy. It's just attached to the split ring at the top of the lure and the one hook point is buried into the top of the lure. It's similar to how Red October tubes are buried into the body of the tube, if you're familiar with that.

Jon talks about doing it in his one video. It's difficult to see, but you can get the idea. Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dEFqNINmLA

Actually, the method Jon uses is to take the split ring off, slip the hook over the eyelet, and then put the split ring back on.

what is the average hook-up % for you guys that do this a lot? Some friends and I played around with this before the water got too hot and landed about 1/3 of the "strikes" we had. We did have bass and walleye catches too so we don't know that EVERY strike was a musky, but thought we would land a higher %. The 2/3 of the strikes i am talking about we dont even fisht the fish, just the bait getting BLASTED and then there is nothing there.
Thanks!

It varies. Some days (not often) I boat eveyone that hits & other days it might be 60% or 70%. You always need to be ready for the strike at all times. Anytime I'm talking to my buddy or another boat that comes by I usually end up missing the hookset or lose the fish. The fish that hit at the top of the jig stroke are the ones that are hardest to land because they usually don't get hooked good.

I agree with Zib. If you jig for 8 hrs, you better be ready for a bite all 8 hrs.

Say there is a 20 ft weedline and I want to jig this weedline. Would going out about a quarter to a half cast length and going around the countor with the trolling motor jigging be a good method? How far down in the water column should it be?

For those wanting to know how to rig an extra hook on top this is how to do it. Cut the welded hook off the treble then remove the split ring from the line tie, place the hook over the line tie then put the split ring back on.

Has anybody been using the Bondy lure with a tail. Are these made for jigging or casting?

I use them for casting out, letting it sink and jigging it back...

Would like to use this thread to thank Jon for outstanding customer service....im sure that comes as no suprise to anyone who has interacted with him but I ordered a bait from his website and after being delayed most likely through customs, he has offered to send out another along with a complementary bait of my choosing. Thanks again for excellent customer service Jon!
