I acquired a 2001 Merc 135hp Opti and am looking for questions, comments and must-do maintenance issues. I have no idea of the previous service history. Reliability comments also appreciated. Thanks.

I ordered my 01 681 with a 135 optimax specifically, still going strong. Keep the water pump impeller fresh. The over heat sensor will alarm if you have much drop in water pressure.

I have a 2000 Opti on my 681 and the overheat alarm is what I have had most problems with. Getting ready to do the water pump kit again. I also have had the low pressure fuel pump (I believe that's what it is called) and a direct injector need to be replaced. I am the second owner and don't have the previous service history on it but I figure that's not too bad for a 12 year old motor. I know some shops offer a PM service to clean the injectors. I've talked to a Merc mechanic on another site regarding it. PM me if you want the info on that.

Run Opti oil or Amsoil. Let the engine warm up a minute or two when it's cold, and a minute when it's not. Let the ignition on horn beep when you turn the key before starting it so everything is moving as it should. Bulletproof block design, and should treat you well if the previous owner cared for it well.

Thanks all. Having the impeller replaced as we speak. Now ones are too much so I will keep this up as best I can. I like Amsoil too.

Run Quicklean in your gas it will help prevent any injector issues and prolong spark plug life. To help with low pressure warnings the water dump hose that comes off the top of the block can be restricted to .090", this will boost water pressure at idle and allows motor to build water pressure faster at start up.

I also run sea-foam with all gas engines especially my opti and the ethanol based fuels. 1oz per gallon of fuel. It has been recomended by some hard-core merc guys on other forums.
