| Is there a general rule of thumb when looking at wind and the waves it generates regarding the size of the waves and the speed of the wind? I understand that the size of the lake wil have a lot to do with it, but mainly thinking about a very big lake. Going to try Mille Lacs for the first time next week and want to be able to guage the waves given the wind speed. Ie. a 10 mph wind would generally produce 1-2 ' seas.

| Water depth plays a huge role in this. A tsunami hitting shore that is 25 feet tall won't be 25 feet tall when it's over 10,000 feet of water. Neck down areas can also come into play. It's not just about wind speed, there are other factors to consider. There are bodies of water that will develop a substantial chop if a mosquito farts on a shoreline. Others won't be too bad in winds over 20mph. |

there are some decent times for sure, but be prepared and you should have a great time. i've been out there in some doozies and if you keep your wits about you, you should be fine and enjoy it. i'll be there soon too ... love that place. staying at the Red Door is convenient with a sheltered private launch and docks if you want to use them. affordable and clean as a whislte! make sure you have your lighted slip-bobbers packed!! too good to not catch some walters while you're there!!

Location: deephaven mn | another factor is where you are at on the lake, meaning the waves will be bigger on the south end with a north wind etc. there are options to fish different areas in different winds to avoid being in the brunt of it.your question is good i would say 10mph is nice, 15mph tolerable, 20mph and you are working to fish |
