Guessing this will be a focus for a couple weeks with the 4th of July coming up. Getting to a 0.08 is not hard and I know a lot of folks like to have a few beers/cocktails on the lake while fishing. |

| I personaly would like to see them crack down alot more with the pleasure boaters and tooner people .Maybe thats what it will take to make them make better decisions on the water . I had one very close call on the water around midnight one night ,it was with in 6' before they saw me . I was sitting in my boat trying to get a backlash out . My boat lights were on along with my head lamp , when I realized we might hit I acually was standing up trying to ready to jump out . I caught up to them when they ran there boat up on a shallow point of a island and totally messed up there lower unit . They were smashed !!!!!!! I let them have it with both barrels and left them there . Thats were they spent the night . So I have no problem with the crack down . |

| Put the legal limit where it belongs at .15 and you won't have near the amount of infractions. |

Location: Hudson, WI | There is a group of "boat club" members on the St. Croix that cruise one day a week. They depart from Afton or Hudson or wherever, boat around for a few hours, hit the bars, etc. Apparently three years ago, one of the members got so piled at a bar in Prescott that he jumped in his boat alone and decided to head back to Afton Marina without the rest of the crew. I guess he thought his 35 foot cabin cruiser was equipped with Autopilot, because he decided to take a nap in the bed in the cabin while the boat was in drive in the dark of night. The Coast Guard found him still sawing logs with the boat completely smashed on shore south of the Kinni.
Anyone who has seen the boat traffic out there knows that it is a miracle that he didn't kill someone. What's worse is that:
A. This happens so much on the party waters that it isn't even news
and B. The patrols out there are too busy checking each fisherman twice to make sure they don't have any walleyes that are short or are trolling three lines to ever enforce it.

I bet if you made it .3 you'd hardly have any infractions. I'm betting you were at least .2 when you wrote that gem. |

Otherwise, beer is for after while you tell the stories of the 60" follow that just wouldn't take the bait. It's too hard to drink a beer and cast bucktails at the same time!

You want to be slinging razor sharp trebles around in that condition? Or driving your rig around in the dark? I personally have not had alot of luck after knocking back a number of drinks anyhow, plus for all the hours you put in do you want to be slow on a hookset when the big girl finally decides to go? Not me.

Great call mack. Drinkin is for later when at the cabin or when on approach to the harbor. Was on Clear Lake (IA) 2 weekends ago and noted most adults drinking on...get this....100% of the boats I glassed on the lake and at the beach. My wife was shocked at the number of big, fast moving boats pulling kids (young kids) on skis or tubes thru all of the other big, fast moving boats captained by drinking boaters. |

0.15 BAC refers to the percentage of blood alcohol content. 0.15%, not 15%.

Location: Cedarburg, Wisconsin | BenR, do not assume things that aren't true. Some people can handle drinking much better than others. It is not a one size fits all situation. It is up to the individual to know their capabilities and be responsible for their actions. That seems to be the big problem, too many people have no concept of responsibility, hence the need to have an overabundance of laws to compensate.
"Either way you are a drunk idiot at .15." Is a pretty strange statement to make. I've seen people that could drink lots and still function quite well, while some people can have one or two beers and be pretty much incapacitated. How a person that is drinking reacts to the surroundings is not a straight function of the amount of alcohol in their bloodstream. |

Not true, the problem is people assume they can handle their drinking. "function quite well", like you would be fine with them driving your children around at .15? Please this thought process is why there are still so many victims of drunk driving at this point. BR

| We bought a "blow-machine" at work because we employ a good sized crew of drivers and were sort of "curious." It's something that for (around $150.00) you really ought to get when folks who think they are totally fine to drive are "legally" OWI. Honestly, it's even a bigger surprise to see how a guy who put-em-down last night and thinks he's slept it off is still over the limit. You can always argue with the officer, and relate to him just how stupid the limit is for a big guy such as yourself.....then let us know how that's working out for you!! |

| I see no issue with having a few while out boating. Those who say they never have are probably lying. What this does is opens the door to more hassle and inspection. You can't legislate stupidity. If they want to watch for stupid behavior then so be it. But pulling people over like the DNR does without cause should be illegal. Even cops can't do that. This just gives them more ability to write tickets. I know someone who got stopped on the Wolf river. They were sober, just fishing and the DNR boarded the boat and wrote a ticket for a missing battery post cover. Absolutely ridicules IMO. Again, give them an inche they will take a mile. |

here in Minn the COPS do it all the time-pull you over,,, all they have to say is "you appeared to be weaving" there are some streets in Bloomington 'old shakopee' and Minnetonka '15' where if your out after a certain time you can figure its 50/50 you will get pulled over for something

.08 in a car as well. Also you need to look at accident rates per amount of boats/cars on the road. I don't think anyone is self-righteous, just informed. Sad part is people still drive their cars after drinking. The only people who think boating or driving at or over the legal limits is okay, are the ones doing it. Plenty of data out there to look at. If you want to drink over the legal limit do it in a private lake or your bathtub, don't put the other people on the lake at risk of your addiction. BR

Location: one foot over the line | Give them a reason and they'll pull you over. BE SMART, have a few drinks if you want to, however, don't overdue you're alloted amount. if you are a new boater, be careful, after alot of sun and water, the drink can affect you in a surprising way. make sure your boat lights are in working condition and take it easy out there. When you get to the landing, make sure your running lights are working properly. Nothing wrong with having a good time, but a little preparation and common sense can go a long way. better to whoop it up when the rig is parked than to find someone to bail you out at o'dark thirty. be safe, be smart. |

This type of mentality is what gets people killed -- mostly innocents. Laws that dictate BAC levels are what they are for a reason, to maintain and enforce standards to ensure the safety of the public. I challenge you to maintain that mentality after you lose a young son or daughter to a drunk driver. Someone who blows .15 is drunk and a danger to themselves and others no matter how "tolerant" they believe they are to alcohol. You want to continue to argue your POV, then I will be more than happy to show you photos of the loved ones we have lost in my family... |

| .08 is an arbitrary limit. Just a few years ago in MN and in other states a guy could be at .09 and be perfectly legal. Now you get a DUI and all the stuff that comes with it. Driving or boating while drunk is a horrible thing, no doubt, but this isn't a black and white issue.
Also, the number of muskie fishermen (and guides!) that smoke weed while fishing is absolutely amazing. Maybe the law should crack down on them, too. |
