Location: Storm Lake, IA | I have a question on the Variable Brake System on the new tranx. I have the PG and it will mainly be used on 10s,13s and hurricanes for right now. I don't have a clue on what weights should and shouldn't be on. And do they need to be balanced or can two be on side by side? |

You have 6 brakes on a TRANX reel, I like to balance them out, so 2 on with a I pattern, 3 on with a Y pattern, 4 on with a X pattern or all 6 six. Shimano says that you do not have to balance them but i think it is better if you do. Also keep the cast control knob all ways loose and turn on more spool brakes if needed. |

Pikemaster - are you saying that the tension knob should be completely loose? Is this the same for all reels (Curado and 400B)? |

One more thing make sure the brake ring is clean and has a little oil / grease on it, just a little |

I set my cast control knob so the spool will not move from side to side, so soon as you feel the knob get tight stop. Then do not TOUCH IT, if you need more brake use the spool brakes, most reels have 6 of them, USE THEM, I love the guys that say they don't use any just there thumb, BIG EGO talking and they never backlash NOT
The cast control is for the very end of a cast so you don't bird nest at the end of the cast. I get reels for service that the spool is off center in the reel frame by a 1/2 inch because guys will use the cast control knob to stop backlashes when there are casting Pounders and the spool tips are wearing holes in the cast control fiber washers and then the gears are out of alignment and reel will sound like a coffee grinder. CK your reel and see if the spool is off center in the frame, if it is then you need to get some new cast control washers for both sides of the reel.
YES that is how I setup all reels I use. |

| Thanks fir the reply. I fished tonight and backed off the tension knobs. Hope I didn't do much damage but they were not super tight. Always heard you set the knob to have the lure slowly drop. Ill keep them set loose from now on. No ego with me (at least as little as a Muskie guy can have) I use at least 3 brakes. Thanks again. |

Location: Iowa Great Lakes | I run all my muskie reels without any brakes on and tension knob backed all the way off, much easier for me to control the cast with my thumb... |
