I'm just wondering if anyone could recommend a modestly priced hook cutters. Heading up to Canada next weekend for the opener and the hook cutter's the only thing missing from my tackle box.

DO not buy a cheap pair of hook cutters. I just bought a second pair of knipex from Aarron at Musky tackle online for $55 they will cut any hook very fast. i now have one on each side of the boat so i can get to it fast.
It not only can save a fish but can save you from serious injury if you get hooked to a thashing fish- been there-- Spend the money on the knipex

Knipex or nothing. Worth making sure there are two pairs in the boat.

Knipex are the best but the price turns most guys away. I bought the $10 Kobalt 8'' Bolt Cutter from Lowes. I haven't used them that much but they do cut good. I've used them for 2 season's going on a 3rd. They have some rust on them & there is some wear on the cutter from cutting .051" stainless steel wire from making a few bucktails. I've only cut about a dozen hooks with them, including all 3 points that I had to cut on a fish yesterday. They're fine for your trip but don't expect them to hold up like Knipex.

OK... I know since we're musky fishing, we have to spend the most amount of money possible on every. single. thing. But seriously; have you ever tried a moderately priced small bolt cutters on a hook? Unless you're using x25 strength, 12/0 hooks, a decent pair of hand-held bolt cutters will cut through the wire of a treble hook like butter. Buy a cheap one, and test it on one of your hooks. If it seems too hard for you to cut through, spend the $55 on the knipex, and use the $10 bolt cutters for household chores. I've been really happy with my cheap bolt cutters, though; never had an issue with them not cutting exactly what i want cut.

Agreed x 100! I had a different pair of cheap Menards hook cutters that I bought last year. Thinking that it would be ok, Thank goodness I tried to modify one of my bull dogs and cut off the top hook or I never would have figured out that they were complete crap. I squeezed as hard as I could with both hands and DENTED the hook cutter blades.... So I went out and bought a pair of knipex and cut the top hook off with my weak hand, hardly any force to do so. They are one of the single most important things you are going to buy.... Just spend the money and get the knipex!

Check Sears.com for knipex as I picked up a new set for $38 at the beginning of the season.

There are others that work as well as knipex for alot less. I have one pair of knipex that i got for $25 online, and one pair of a cheaper brand (don't remember) but have used them both and i couldn't tell the difference. I do know that i only paid about $13 for the cheap pair. (they may be craftsman, i am not sure)

If you don't know what cutters may or may not work as well as a knipex, get a knipex. Buddy of mine bought a cheap pair once swore they were as good. I needed to cut a hook he handed them to me. They would not cut the hook. Got out my knipex and the hook was cut instantly. The other cutters did not make the trip back to the boat ramp at the end of the day. The question you have to ask yourself is this. Is it worth the risk?

When there's a hook in your wrist or hand and a fish on the other hook...you WILL wish you had spent the $55 instead of $15

Knipex mini bolt cutters - only way to go. Cheaper pairs might cut a hook. Will they cut an 8/0 Mustad 3551 if you can only reach the hook with the tip of the cutters... with your weak hand?

I can clearly remember a fish that inhaled a weagle and had hooks wrapped around and through it's gills. Some careful cutting and that fish was released without shedding a drop of blood. Without a GOOD pair of cutters, I would have killed that fish without a doubt.

Like was said above, I'm sure I would give the $50 up again if I had a big treble in a fish and myself at the same time.

I've never tried the other cutters so maybe some do work well. I would test them by cutting a heavy hook using just the very tip of the cutter with your weak hand. Never know what pinch you might get into. The other question I would ask is will cheaper cutters hold up? Will the jaws dent and dull? Will the hinge get sloppy and affect performance? I've had the same set of Knipex for years and they are still going strong.

Knipex are outstanding. Lungemadness nailed it.
You want the CoBolt cutters for sure; you can get the spring loaded opening/return type or ones without it.
My next pair will have the spring opening.
Good info here. Good video.

Felco cutters work well too, but aren't much cheaper than a Knipex.. I have Knipex mini bolt cutters, and felco c3 cutters in my boat and both have cut countless hooks with ease.. I used to use the $10 ones untill as someone else stated, they get crooked and stop working properly..
I got both sets used on ebay for around $30 each and have used them for many years now.. At least 5years for the knipex, and 4 now on the Felcos.
Even a used set of quality cutters will outlast almost any of the cheap ones..

I bought a pair of the Kobalts from Lowes, and they work good for a few hooks but they dont last. If you watch Ebay I picked up a pair of Knipex for 25 bucks.

Definitely keep an eye on Ebay. I picked up a backup set for $25 shipped. Slightly used, but cuts big hooks just like my new ones.

Knipex aren't just for the fish. If you have a hook in your hand and trying to cut it with a cheap set of cutters, you will quickly wish you would have spent another $20-$30.

I own the regular, but I have used the Spring loaded (for general use) and I like it better. Don't get me wrong LOVE my Knipex, but next time I spend the money it will be on the spring loaded one

I've only had the spring loaded knipex but love them, they work great and have held up very well. I used the cheap ones but wore them out fast cutting the top hook off mag dawgs. First fish I struggled getting the hooks cut on I broke down and bought the goods. They save fish and as mentioned heaven forbid a fish ever does thrash a hook in you your going to be either very glad you went Knipex or very sad you went cheap.
