Looking at getting a Toro and was wondering if you guys like the winch or the high speed better for blades? I will probably use it for crank baits also. Your input is appreciated.

How i see it, the Winch is great at dbl 10's or bigger. But i think thats all its really good for. It's kind of slow for other baits but cranks could work with the winch depending on the lure.

Get yourself a used 400 Calcutta TE, put a power handle on it. Similar price range, SUPER reliable, WAY more versatile.

i know you have never ask anything about shimano, but like MuskieMike i also suggest you a used 401 calcutta .for me the first quality of the calcutta is reliability, that thing is just simply near 100% indestructible!

It is actually the nuts for me when working slow moving topwaters... creepers, hog wobbler's, and such.  It's also good for your tail props if you want to work them slow. You could argue to just slow down with a regular reel but when I work a creeper... I like to work it puke slow and I find it easier to adjust to it with a winch.

It's a pretty strange feeling when you switch from zipping in a smaller bucktail with a HS TranX recovering line at almost 4' to one of these winches with a slow moving top water... both ends of that spectrum for sure.

Agree with the d10 or bigger assessment (same with large cranks), no way you could ever "burn" anything with that gear ratio, but it's amazing how much easier it is winding in larger blades.

I think the recommendation of the Calcutta is a solid (and silky smooth) choice... very versatile reel. I've never use the high-speed Toro, maybe somebody who has used both can chime in.

I love my winch for all topwaters except WTD. With a full spool, I can work them (Pacemakers, Topraiders, etc) as fast as I want or - more importantly- as slow as I want. Sure, I cant really burn 'em, but I don't burn topwaters.

when you say blades do you mean 10`s,toro hs will be too hard to crank 10`s in and will most likely tear the reel up,the 5:4 is meant for cranks and topwaters and small blades, the winch would be for 10`s,the hs is great for small blades and jerkbaits, gliders, wtd topwaters, burning in choppers.

If you plan to mostly use blades, I'd look at a saltist too. Brings in blades fast without the pain in your wrists...

I put a shimano 12/14 trinidad handle on a toro hs, and it actually works really good for smaller blades like harrassers and grinders.
