I would mainly use this reel for burning big bucks and big rubber baits. Is this a good choice? It will be paired with a monster heavy 8-40oz musky innovations rod. Thanks.

A good choice, but a heavy set up for long days out on the water.

The 40 is HUGE. Get a 20, or maybe a 30 at the most. The 20 is plenty fast, and noticeably smaller.

If you are trying to go for the Xtreme Reel setup then the 40 will win, but for me I would go with the Saltist 20

I too would suggest the 30. I have a few of them and use em for big blades and large plastic. They will even work as a spare winch for your boat trailer if it ever breaks! Yesterday I hooked a 4 foot sturgeon and there was no problems getting it to the boat in the current... A 20 might be a bit small for pounders and Super Mag D's and the like. But it is a great reel for burning double 10's ans 12's. Also either reel work great for large crank baits and those oversized gliders.

I dont know if levelwind is a must but if not I would recommend the saltist bg35. Reel is a little heavy and took some adjustments to get used to but am now loving it. Filled the spool pretty full and measured 43" return per crank. Ripped some 13's this morning and was pleased with the performance. I have it in a TI XXH 9'.

I have the 20 and so far I really like it. I took the spring out so it's easier to engage after the cast.

I had a 40. It was too big for my liking. It pulled like a horse, though. It was harder to hang onto the rod than it was to turn the handle and bring in the bucktail at Mach 3. It didn't cast all that well either. I could cast 3 times further with my Calcutta 400b on the same rod than with the Saltist.

I have a 20 and 30. The 20 is perfect. I can't imagine what a 40 would be like...

pounderdawg

dont go with the 40,,go with the 30 people think the 40 will give you larger diameter and more speed when you need it but they dont revolve smoothly on the cast and most people get rid of them
I have the 30 and love it 10's dawgs I even tossed 2 pounders with it on the opener
its been a great reel especially for less then $200 which is getting to be cheap in the muskie world
