I have a new 2011 Optimax 75 which had the wrong pitch prop (21 p)- motor exhibited hesitation on take off and at mid throttle. I took it in to the dealer and they replaced the prop with a 19p but I am still experiencing the odd hesitation with a slight change in load for instance if I fill up the live well the hitch comes back although not nearly as bad as with the 21p. I notice with the extra 40 lbs or so from the live well the WOT RPMs changes by aboout 250 rpm. The new pitch prop has the WOT RPMs about mid range (5550) with the boat lightly loaded. Boat is a 17' Lowe Jon about 800lbs.

Is this normal? Has anyone else experienced any lack of smoothness with changing loads?
Mercury and the dealer are saying because of the complexity of the motor it is sensitive to changes in conditions such as varying loads, "Certain loads may be outside the calibration of the motor and cause a lean pop".

Thanks for any thoughts!

I run the same motor on my 1760 which is almost twice as heavy. Im running a 16P vengance prop and have no problems what so ever. 36 gal of fuel on my rig and loaded with gear and three guys still pops out of the hole and cruises smooth... have you checked your spark plugs?

Yes the plugs have been checked and replaced.
The problem isn't there all the time. Seems to be more obvious if you are a little slower to hit the gas out of the hole and only happens at about half WOT when crusing. Once you get past the half throttle, it goes like stink. As long as you leave it at the not so "sweet spot" it hesitates, just for an instant, about every 15 seconds or so. At times it seems impossible to get it to act up.

I was wondering if anyone had experienced similar symptoms from experimenting with too much pitch? If not I have a problem I need to get fixed while I am still under warranty. Mercury is presently saying this is normal (after several weeks in the shop).

I had a similar problem a couple of years ago. It ended up being a high speed coil. Mine went out rather quickly. But the same symptoms.

That does not sound right. My 75 opti does not do that.
It does remind me of my ignition coil problem though. My motor was skipping or stuttering for a week and then - they went and took the mother board with it - $3000 under warranty though:)
Merc looked after me.

maybe a bad primer ball in the fuel line?

They checked the coils right after the plugs didn't fix it. Also replaced the air injectors. They were about to replace the fuel rail and pump when they decided it was the prop (assume they eliminated the primer ball).

In any case I am getting the message that no one is suggesting this is a normal example of a mismatched prop to load.
