I will be up fishing Rough Rock Lake, Gunn Lake, Big Sand Lake and Little Sand Lake the last week of June. I was wondering if anyone has fished this for muskies and has any general tips for this early in the season?

Lots of water and lots of options up there. I usually goa bit later in the summer but have been there for opener one week. Fish seemed to like the weeds a bit more on the June trip but it was a lower water/early spring year so there were a good # of rock fish. The big pike bite was extra good as well which is a bonus for me. Look for current breaks, weed rock combos, and don't forget to check a few rock reefs and points.

I went with a group of guys on an annual trip in late June back in the mid to late 90's, staying in a cabin on Little Sand. Most of the crew were walleye guys, but some spent some time muskie fishing, and I tried to spend most of my time muskie fishing. Look for the backwater, spawning bays on the map and then fish the adjacent structure leading into/out of those bays. In Little Sand, for instance, check out the 3 bays on the west-facing shore of Harbour Island, Duck Bay, the bays around Rough Rock narrows, etc. Big Sand also has a number bays off the main lake (like Moose Bay, the bay west of Green Island, for example) and there are a few with inflowing water. Those are all good. Find emerging weeds in combination with rock structure around those areas and you'll be on fish. 7" Suicks and 6" reef hawgs are excellent for this time of year. Brighter colors seemed best in the stained water. Oranges/yellows, etc. Good luck.

Great system to fish. Though, in My opinion, late June could be quite early. Lots of deep water in that system, and it seems to shine the last 2 weekes in July and 1st 2 weeks in August. Of course, this spring was pretty early. One + is the fact that most big girls will still be shallow.

Relatively easy to navigate also. What I liked about the system is, the early bird got the worm. Hint, hint!!!

If I had to give you one tip, first time I fished the system, I hit as many navigational bouys as possible. They seem to hold some real tankers!!!

My last few trips I fished the late August time frame. Less musky guys, and had limited pressure. Had several 19 - 27 fish trips. Those fish in that system are very thick.

The problem I had with that system, just too many musky guys for the amount of prime spots, IMO. If you fish smart, you can work around everybody.

Listen to the previous posters on the shallow bays for your time frame. good info.
Good luck;
JIM

I personally like to head up into Rough Rock. Less people typically fishing for muskie. In past I have gone up there the second week of July and have had good luck. It is a fun area to explore, so check it all out. I seemed to find fish almost everywhere. Don't be afraid to head south of Minaki either. Two of the biggest fish I saw up there were south of that area.
