I notice "Canadian" boats like the Alaskan and Kodiac have lower front casting decks than most other fishing boats. What is the reseasoning behind this lower design? Harder to fall out of the boat in rough / big water? Any other reasons?

The only Canadian boats I am aware of are Harbourcraft, Kingfisher and Princecraft. Princecraft was purchaced by Mercury and in my opinion quality has suffered. All make boats of all styles both low and high casting decks and no casting deck. High decks give more storage and are better for sight fishing. Lower decks give more security when its rough. If it's that rough I'm looking for calmer water or trolling.

Princecraft was not purchased by Mercury. It is owned by the same parent company as Mercury, which is Brunswick.

Do you have any specifics as to why you believe quality has suffered?

I believe he is talking about the "Canadian Series" of boats not the make of Canadian made boats. Lund has the "Alaskan" series & Crestliner & Smokercraft have or once had lines of boats that were the "Canadian Series", which are/were comparable to the Lund Alaskan series.

I have an 18 ft. Lund Alaskan and really love the lowered front deck. The whole boat is all wide open and has lots of room to roam, uninterupted. The lowered deck has some advantages, in my opinion. Figure eights can be done deeper with less effort and you are right down at the fishes level. Netting fish is easier when you are down their too. Disadvantages are long rods and jerk baits, with the rod splash. You can always hop up to the storage areas in that case, although they are a bit narrow. I once considered adding a higher front deck, but got used to it and actually prefer it now. They are very under-rated boats and excellent fishing rigs for muskies.

I was told that the lower decks were for hauling more cargo while keeping the center of gravity relatively low. The Canadian series of boats are workhorses and are often used to haul lumber or supplies to places that do not have road access.
