| I recently purchased, had installed, and tested Terrova with 60 inch shaft.
Very nice trolling motor but am concerned with the bang'in it takes when traveling on water when not in use and when trailering boat.
I also notice that it looks like that they just used the same plate as before which was a smaller shaft Minn kota.. so now the head of the Terrova hangs off the side edge of the bow a bit (when in storage mode).. basically just enough which makes you want to always dock your boat on the otherside.
So my questions are
- What can I make or purchase to help with pounding?
-Should I have the angle of the plate which is mounted to the bow changed?
Any suggestions are appreciated! |

Location: Stevens Point, WI | Ram Mount makes a mount specifically for a trolling motor. Connect it when traveling in rough water or trailering and that'll certainly take care of any pounding on the motor head.

As for the motor now sticking outside of your boat with the larger shaft motor, yes, reinstall your trolling motor at a different angle, I would highly suggest that. A properly installed motor has the head just inside the gunnel so it doesn't hit docks and it would fit properly under a cover.

Location: Stevens Point, WI | They do offer different lengths of mounts as well. Those can be found here.

Location: Rhinelander | I believe if you contact Minn Kota they suggest NOT to use a Ram mount for the bouncing head....
If it was needed/required wouldn't Minn Kota offer a solution? |

Location: Contrarian Island | i think putting one on a ram mount actually adds to the shock the head takes...I have the ram mount thingy on mine and after using it a couple times years ago decided it actually causes more shock to the head....ie. looks like Minn Kota thinks the same thing I do... ; ) no ram mount imo. |

| ^ what he said. Unless the head is physically banging on your gunnel I would not install one. A ram mount directly transfers the shock from the bow into the head. Just because it looks like it isn't moving with a ram mount doesn't mean its not taking a pounding. |

Location: MN | Its not so much the bouncing that wears on the head, but the base of the motor. I had the metal bracket on which the motor pivots break because I didn't have the a support system for the motor shaft. Granted the motor was 8 years old, and we had been pounding 4 footers all day long. I would say the support arm would have far extended the life of the motor

Location: Kodiak, AK | I have those issues as well. My Riptide (and Terrova before it) head hangs just over the side of the boat, but if I change the angle too much, the base and powerhead hit the winch tower when the boat slides off the trailer. As it is now, I have to make sure the prop is facing backwards when I slide it off the trailer or it'll hit. Any more angle and it'd rip the side plate of the TM off and I know several other guys with the same issue. No biggie and it's a non-issue with installation considerations, but it is something to be aware of. It doesn't stick out enough that it prevents me from docking on that side of the boat.
As for the RAM mount, I see it the same as a transom saver for my outboard. I'm not worried about vibration going into the head of the Riptide...it'll get vibes either way regardless. I'm worried about the head bouncing so much that it fatigues the TM base or the TM pad on the boat. I check the torque on my TM bolts several times a season. The water I fish is brutal on a boat and it's bolt ons. |
