I run a 9' for everything except a small selection of gliders, those I run on an 8' only for the simple fact I have it...

I'm still in the 7'6" club for gliders. For dive/rise jerkbaits I'll use a 9' now. I like the figure 8s that Gregg was doing in the video link above, but I'm just not comfortable using a long rod for gliders throughout the main cast. I'll have to give it more of a chance this year, but I'm pretty committed to a 7'6" at the moment.

After watching that video I'm wondering if doing a figure eight when using a glide bait is worthwhile, as I thought it was the speed and rapid change of direction that triggers a lot of strikes on the 8. Would it maybe be better to have another rod rigged with a throwback lure when running gliders.
I guess what I'm asking is whether doing a figure eight with a glider triggers strikes.

I have a 7'6" that I use for Jerk baits. But I was out with a buddy last year and he was using his 9' for jerk baits. I tried it out and the only difference, is just like the video, having to use it as a sideways motion instead of a down ward motion. You still get the same action in the lure, just a different stance really. I think it works fine, I just picked up a 9' this year and will be trying it more regularly. but I think that doing an 8 with the glide baits is worth it. If you do get that follow up to the boat on glides, you can still increase your speed (depending on the lure type) just go a little faster with the jerks. Only happened to me one time last year, but I got her to hit on the 8, I also lost her too... but she hit...
