I have been using an old sharpening stone that my grandfather gave me years ago. It was always nice to use as he started my fishing "sickness" years ago but the stone is no longer convenient or practical. I am looking to get a new sharpener with a handle and am wondering if the are all the same. Any guidance or recomendations would be great. Thanks.

Thank you. Great information. My search feature must be messed up as I searched multiple word combinations and didn't get any worthy threads.

+1 on Luhr Jensen.

I bought a red handled file at Thorne when I saw it for $7ish after LJ got bought out and the price jumped ALOT.

I used the red handled file on a couple trebles and literally tossed it in the drink so I was never tempted to try it again. Only yellow handled LJ's for me now.

Best thing I found is two halves of a chainsaw file, fused together with JB Weld. Don't ask how I got two halves of a chainsaw file.

Guess I have to pick up a Lur Jensen.
I currently have a wood handled sharpener, and it does not seem to work - couldn't tell you the maker...

I really like the Smity files. He does both the flat file and the doubled chain saw style in two sizes. VERY reasonable too. He uses good steel.

I use the Lur Jensen file for dull hooks & I use the wife's emery boards on new hooks.

I took a flat Stihl chain saw file and put a handle on it. I have lots of LJ's before and after buy out and like the like the Stihl chain saw file the best. The cost is around 7 or 8 bucks. Watch for the sales.

I got a rapala one recently. It has a black handle. I went through my lures and it took me about two afternoons to sharpen my hooks. I'm pretty happy with it.
