I am looking for a new reel, but need it to be able to do 2 things. I want to be able to burn blades without too much effort. I also would like a reel that I would be able to throw bigger baits with. This would not be a reel that I would use all day to throw blades, as I also have a revo winch. I already have:
Compre 7ft with a pluton used for lighter cranks and jerk baits
Daiwa VIP 8 ft with a toro 51 all around , used for topwaters and smaller rubber, larger jerkbaits.
Okuma EVX 8'6" with a revo toro 61 used for bigger blades mostly and bigger rubber

I'm just looking for opinions about what reel I should get. I can get a new revo toro 61 or I might save up for a bit and get a calcutta 401TE, as the season does not start until June for me. I would be pairing this reel with a 9ft XXH rod. Thanks for your input.

Both reels your looking at aren't really gonna "burn" blades. If you wanna burn blades look at a Trinidad, Avet, Tranx or Saltist. Without a doubt a Calcutta TE works great for bucktails, plastics and pretty much anything. If you want little effort when tossing blades then get a TE with power handle. I don't throw bucktails that much where I fish but I traveled somewhere and fished 4 10+ hour days and threw nothing but big bucktails with a Calcutta TE and it was perfect. Although a Calcutta doesn't really "burn" blades but the speed was fine where I was fishing as we put lots of fish in the boat. In my opinion a Calcutta is top notch reel and you can use it for anything. It's bulletproof and worth waiting for. I've got two that I love!

Good luck burning big blades (anything bigger than 8's) with a Toro 61 HS. I have an HS and 8's and bigger feel like they are too much for the reel and will tire you out.

Thanks for the input so far. Does anyone have any experience with the Toro HS and the TE, specifically in terms of how they handle double 10's and larger blades, as this would be something I would be using this combo for.

I love my Saltist 20 for the blades and big rubber, big power handle yet small enough to palm like the Trinidad

Why does every body think they have to burn baits?

I know both reels and for blades you will want a TE and if you got a power handle on it from Daves reel service you would be setup nice for blades. The Toro HS is a good reel but it will be alot of work for anything over double 8s. Good luck!

I own both of those reels. TE handles 10's and 13's great, better with a power handle and you can get them moving pretty fast. Just not as fast as some of the saltwater stuff.

I know everyone is itching for fishing but some people, including myself, would like some of your opinions. I like to burn blades. When I was up on eagle lake with steve herbeck that's all they preached at the lodge " if u have a hot fish chasing, burn it"!!!! Some people preach by it. If you don't have any advise search a thread where it's meaningful and respond. Themquestion is between reels of choice not fishing preference.

I apologize to the OP. Between the toro hs and 400te I'd go with the te. It's just a question that has been beaten to death, resuscitated, and then beaten some more for oh about the past 6 years.

imo burning definitely has it's place, I just think it's a bit overrated. And the truth about reels for burning is this - every bit of energy that moves your bucktail comes from your arm. You can gear down and crank like a madman, or gear up and crank slow and hard, based your own personal preference. I think it was one of the chats on this site where Steve Hrbeck recommended the toro winch as the best big blade reel, so 'burning' is definitely a relative term.

Don't apologize Cast10k, that was one of the best lines I've read on this site. Plenty of good responses, too.

The 400 TE has a line pickup of only 25" with a full spool, the Toro Winch has a line pickup with a full spool of 22" so you are not gaining alot with the 400TE
The reel you should be looking at is the Calcutta 700 TE it will handle blades with ease, with 31" of line pickup and BIG PLASTIC and comes with a Power Handle.
If you want to save $$$ look at the Saltist L/W 20 35" of line pickup and will handle BIG PLASTIC. To burn a DCG10 you will need a reel that has over 30" of line Pickup. Hope this helps.

I was going to recommend a 700 to him, but he is asking for lefty reels and the 700 does not come in a lefty version on, at least not on Shimano's website. I do agree that or the Tranx PG (not much more $$$ if new) would be the ideal reels for this rod, at least IMO, but if he wants a lefty then neither will meet his needs.

If I was a lefty I would learn how to fish with a right hand reel. Plus when I order parts for a left hand reel it is 50% more then a right hand reel.

This is real funny. Just about all left handed folks I know DO fish with a right handed reel. Just why would they pass the rod back and forth all day in order to fish? The reel (punny eh?) question remains why do right handed folks like to pass the rod back and forth between casts?

Because when I cast, I don't palm the reel in the same position as I want to when I'm reeling. If I fish with a "lefty" reel, I have to adjust my hand position just as much anyways. Doesn't make any difference.

And to the original OP's post, I would go with the saltist 20 if you really want to burn them and don't want to spend the money on a 700 TE, Trini, TranX, etc. A 400 TE will slow roll them really well, but you won't get a ton of speed. Saltist is a great reel for the money for that purpose.

Thanks for all the input. As I stated I have no problem casting and reeling with my right. I just prefer the left. For me it comes down to the fact that as a right hand dominant person I prefer to reel with my left hand and set the hook, jerk the rod etc with my dominant hand.

For the ones that like the Revo Toro's I would recommend the discontinued 5.4 speed. I did not believe it but if you check out the Gander Mountain web site you can still order them from the catalog on-line. Just ordered one 4 days ago and picked it up today. Going to replace the Toro Winch and see how it compares. That is going on the sling-blade. Have a 700te on the big-dawg. Do not know how many they still have left in their inventory but they have both the 50 and 60 5.4
