| Just got my tranx 500HG and i need a new rod to go with it! My biggest rod right now is an 8 foot gander rod. I was thinking of getting a 9 foot TI XH or XXH but i'm not sure what one to get. or if the 9 feet is really necessary. Im fairly new to the muskie world and want to know your guys opinions.
So Let me know what you guys think! not looking to spend over 150$ and if i should get a telescoping rod or a one piece. also i would prefer to be able to buy it at gander, because i have a gift card but i'm sure if i cant purchase it at gander ill find something else to spend that 30$ on
Thanks guys!

Location: Iowa | I got Musky Mayhem's Avaio 9 ft Heavy rod rated 8-18 ounces last year and loved it. It was the only rod I used from the time I got it in September to ice up. It's $239.99 retail but worth every penny for as light as it is and as much fatigue as it takes off your body...I would highly recommend it! I paired mine with a saltist 20LW and have thought seriously about getting another rod and putting a tranx on it... |

If telescoping is what you want, look at the TI and Okuma brands in that price range. |

| youre going to get a lot of TI recommendations from a lot of people and for good reason: they're excellent rods. Depending on what you plan on throwing most id say the 9'0 TI XH or Okuma 9'3 XH (both telescoping) would be perfect. you'll love the 9'0 length. |

Couldn't agree more. Reel is much more important than rod in my opinion. |

| Look at the TI XXH 9 foot rod. I don't own a tranx but heard its built for heavy use so having a rod to match would be good. |

| I second the Avaio. I have the 9 f'ter and it throws just about everything well. It's what I'll most likely pair a Tranx with if I ever feel the need to purchase one. |

I just got one of the Hulbert rods, planning to use it as a backup. I really, really like it. Not saying that it compares to my Legend Tournament, but for the price tag ($125 shipped) it is hard to beat. |

I for got about Hulbert's rods, ive read great reviews on that one as well. pretty versatile rod.
Or as Kodiak said put it towards an 8'6 XH premier |

Location: Okoboji | i just think you should get a croix for that tranx....that is my opinion though.. you can do what you want. haha your pretty close on money for the 8'6 extra heavy. do that and save up for a handle extension and weight job to balance it and you would have a pretty sweet combo that would last forever. |

Location: South-Central VA | If I were you, I'd just pic up a TI rod. What are you planning on throwing with it? If you're going to be throwing double 10's and lures 8-9oz or under, go with an XH. For double 12's and lures larger than 9oz, go with the XXH. The nice thing about TI rods- no handle extension needed! Oh, and you'll love a 9' rod if you haven't fished with one yet.

please correct me if i am wrong but i think it also comes down to if you want the fast action that the croix has or the medium fast action of the ti....myself i love the fast action. but that is me... but keep in mind i am no rod expert. lol |

| That reel just screams bucktails. My advice would be to roll with that and get something 9' minimum. Okuma's are great at your price point, but I'd definitely encourage you to bump up the budget to the Aviao. (sp?)
On a side note: I'd pay attention to rod action. (one manufacturer's "fast" is not always the same as another's) The Okuma XH as an example, has 4-16oz lure weight, but if you've ever used one you know it is quite stiff. This is great for heavy rubber like Pounders, but when tossing a DCG the rod doesn't load well and you do a lot more of the work. Find something a little faster in the tip, but balance that against the pull of the blades so you are not wielding a wet noodle in the figure 8. (couldn't resist the term)

i just got the Hulbert 9' heavy rod myself and it's a beast of a rod.. was out throwing 10's and plastic up to 12oz in the pond today and i am very happy with it.. can't speak on durability yet but this is my best rod for big baits.. got mine new off of ebay for $85 shipped.. |

| But, if it were me I'd get a TI, Hulbert rod or a St. Croix premier. |

When I bought the Avaio, I talked with the guys at Thorne and they told me the Avaio is about as close to the Predator as you can get. Plus, you save a little more than $100 with it. It's a great option for the price, but if you're considering it, I'd spend the extra and get the Predator. At the time I bought mine I couldn't justify the extra $$$, but my next rod will be a Predator (after my Long Ranger arrives). |

| the preds are worth it. btw the legends and the preds you cant go wrong theyre both american made by st croix. with the predator though you can customize it and if there is one thing i would change about my big nasty it would be the cork diameter its just too small i like to have fat cork or full wells style xflock/eva foam foregrips and longer handle length--but then again thats just me, either rod is excellent though |

| For me personally the best thing about ordering a custom rod is being able to order the diameter of the cork handle you want. I had found through the years that by having a much larger diameter handle and fore grip that my hands have a lot less fatigue and don't cramp as much at the end of the day. Especially if you are on a week long trip. I have ordered rods through Thornes and Frank and the diameter that works best for me is 1 3/8". I have a couple where the foregrip is at 1 1/2" and that really helps me with the pulling and extra fatigue related to double 10's and 13's. |

He has about any St Croix blank you will want and I also see he builds on the Predator blank too. Click on the pictures in the below link too. Some really cool designs Jeremy has done in the past. Once my son and daughter get a little older I plan on having him make my kids some really cool theme custom rods for whatever they are into at that time. Maybe a Hello Kitty musky rod

The bulldawg series is what you are looking for, very strong and realiable rods. Not luxery, but great blanks and plenty of models to choose from.
