Hey guys I am going to take my self and my 13 year old son to Canada for the first time. My question is DOES he need a passport? I know for sure I will. We will be driving there.
Thanks
Steve

Passport is really the only way to prove you are a US citizen, why not have one, kinda like owning a gun. H

Doesn't need a passport to get into Canada but needs one to get back into the US. Therefore the Canadian government will check that he has one going across into Canada.

Just curious, what make you think your son won't need one?

well for $100 dollars its not a deal breaker for me but my brother. He says his kid who is also 13 prob will not need one again and to spend a extra $100 would be the straw that breaks the camels back.
I plan on talking my kid again next year if he has a good time.
My brother is on penny counting you know what.
Thats the only reason.

Under the age of 16 requires an original or a certified copy of the child's birth certificate if traveling by land. Passport is required for air travel.

Incorrect.

From the WHTI:

"Beginning June 1, 2009, U.S. and Canadian citizen children under age 16 arriving by land or sea from contiguous territory may also present an original or copy of his or her birth certificate, a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, a Naturalization Certificate, or a Canadian Citizenship Card."

http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/minors/minors_834.html

Click on the link in the third bullet point. "Learn if your child requires a U.S. passport to travel by land or by sea"

So to answer the original question: The 13 year old does not need a passport. Just an original birth certificate with a raised seal.

If the kids are from divorced parents, be sure to have a notarized note, saying they know about the trip and have given permission, from the other parent with the exact dates of travel.

I think it's a good idea to have a notorized letter from your wife anyways just in case they say something. I had one before my daughter turned 18. they never asked but you never know. How are they supposed to know if you're divirced or not?

You should also think about getting a medical authorization as well from your wife.
